What's the role?
Our downstream manufacturing site at Pernis, Rotterdam is a joint oil refinery and chemicals manufacturing site. It produces a broad range of products that are used for various everyday products from paints to petrol.
Within Shell’s Process Control Domain, there are around 22 Manufacturing, 215 Upstream and 300 Distribution locations which are all managed locally. There are approximately 1100 FTEs working in the global Process Automation Control and Optimization (PACO) engineering skill pool.
And that's why we need you: A Senior DCS/SIS project engineer who will join our team of 20 instrument engineers in Pernis, The Netherlands.
Shell Pernis has a very large installed base of control systems. The installation dates, makes and types of these systems varies widely. There is a continuous requirement for life-cycle management related projects, as well as expansion and optimization related projects. The life-cycle management related projects are executed by an in-house engineering team, consisting of engineers from Shell, Engineering Contractors and Suppliers.
What will you do?
As one of our DCS/SIS project engineers, you’ll be required to deliver project engineering and assurance for control systems related migration and upgrade projects. This includes fit-for purpose specification and engineering of systems like DCS (Distributed Control system), IPS (Instrument protective System) and F&G (Fire & Gas Detection).
Next to project engineering, you will;
lead by example, motivate, coach and provide active guidance to maintenance staff, contractor office personnel and/or contractor staff. You will be the technical authority on your projects and provide assurance that our regulations and standards are implemented. You encourage enterprise first behaviors in/across multiple teams and recognize & reward staff who excel in their personal performance Drive team HSE performance in line with business performance targets.
pro-actively promote and exercise safety interventions in the field. Whilst complying with prevailing regulatory and Shell requirements and suggest fit-for-purpose improvements.
contribute to the site initiative to reduce waste by eliminating inefficiencies of working processes. You pro-actively assist to exploit the potential of instrumentation and systems to assure process safety, improve the site operational availability and reduce maintenance cost level.
be able to network effectively to keep abreast of technological developments, contribute to recognize and actively introduce project execution best-practices.

The Pernis site is one of the largest petrochemicals sites in Europe with over 550 hectares (incl. Europoort Terminal) of processing facilities. The site includes the largest refinery asset in Europe, >400,000 bbls/day with high complexity -hydrocracker, cat cracker, HF alkylation, HYCON, visbreakers, gasification, base oil -units. The site includes several chemical assets: polyols, hydrocarbon solvents, MTBE, DMK, IPA, glycol ethers. On top of that the Pernis site is integrated with the Moerdijk Chemicals site and underpins significant trading activity.

What we need from you
You’ll have 10+ years’ experience in DCS/IPS systems Engineering. Knowledge of refining and/or chemical processes & process technology is essential for experienced Engineers. You have strong interpersonal and influencing skills to work effectively in/and across multi-functional teams and interface with a wide range of internal stakeholders, customers and service providers. You’ll display courage and professionalism in people management, lead, develop and foster an open culture within the team to drive for success.
Educated to BSc or B Eng equivalent in engineering. Fluency in Dutch is required, combined with English language skills both spoken and written. You’ll display a high degree of initiative and independence to deliver results through others. Effective stakeholder management is essential to identify and understand (business) requirements and translate these into delivering
Capable of defining and describing project requirements and developing an execution strategy to realize these.
Experience with Honeywell DCS/IPS systems and/or expertise in the IT areas of virtualisation and networking are an advantage.
