If you’re an Indirect Tax Adviser with experience in delivering strategic and high quality indirect tax advice as well as compliance assurance and support, then this role is a chance to develop your tax career within a leading player in the energy sector.
What’s the role?
You will deliver high quality indirect tax advice, compliance assurance and support to all businesses and functions operating in Australia. Support Regional Indirect Tax Lead, Country Tax Lead and regional/global projects as appropriate.
Some of the key deliverables and responsibilities of this role are:
Formulate and implement indirect tax strategies, initiatives, guidelines, controls and procedures for tax, finance and business to ensure Shell conducts business efficiently, in line with current Australia indirect tax laws and practices, and in accordance with both Shell Group Business Principles and Shell Group Tax Policies.
Manage the provision of quality and timely indirect tax advice for all major Australia business transactions and projects, making recommendations that are objective, practical, technically appropriate, and supportive of the business objectives, while balancing between maximising opportunities and minimising exposures
Establish clear accountabilities for Australia indirect tax compliance and other processes that are performed outside the Tax Function (e.g. FO organisation, business, Finance)
Ensure timely and accurate submission of indirect tax returns (including any other related information, schedules etc. as required or requested by the relevant authorities) that are under the control of the Managed Indirect Tax Function and/or the business.
Ensure that all Australia indirect tax exposures with an impact on Group Tax reporting are properly reviewed, monitored, reported and managed
Maintain contact and relationships with all Australian tax and fiscal authorities, related Government departments, industry and professional firms on all matters concerning indirect tax that have a direct impact on Shell. This will include (but not limited to) indirect tax lobbying, shaping, audit queries, challenges, risk reviews and negotiating / settling tax disputes and obtain fiscal approvals.
Support the implementation of global indirect tax strategies and processes in Australia and the development and implementation of standards and priority processes. Network with customers / advisers and internal colleagues to establish and share best practice and assist as required on regional & global initiatives. Take part in special tax projects and support the Regional and Country Tax Leads on all Indirect Tax matters.

What we need from you:
Thorough knowledge and understanding of Australia indirect tax laws, practice and relevant principles with ability to interpret legal text, evaluate risks, balance risks with business objectives, form judgments and make / communicate recommendations that are objective, practical, technically sound and in the best interests of Shell businesses.
Demonstrates imagination and creativity in the evaluation of issues and development of possible solutions.
Demonstrated experience in indirect tax practice or an in-house tax function with a recognise professional qualification in managing Goods and Services Tax, Excise & Customs Duties. Practical experience and knowledge of resources (oil and gas) industry preferred.
Effective team player with strong Leadership Attributes who demonstrate flexibility and initiative to undertake proactive, strategic action and make decisions and recommendations with minimal supervision.
Good negotiation skills and effective at managing relationships and influencing others within and outside of Shell.
Ability to adapt to new or changing circumstances and ambiguous or pressurised situations.
