IBM External Relations Professional - Watson Health in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

At IBM, work is more than a job - it's a calling: To build. To design. To code. To consult. To think along with clients and sell. To make markets. To invent. To collaborate. Not just to do something better, but to attempt things you've never thought possible. Are you ready to lead in this new era of technology and solve some of the world's most challenging problems? If so, lets talk.

Your Role and Responsibilities

Location: Cambridge, MA (preferred) or Astor Place, NY. Please note we are not able to offer relocation assistance.

Are you passionate about helping “fix” or change healthcare? Do you have strong media relationships in healthcare and/or tech that you have used to help communicate complex healthcare ideas and themes in an articulate and more simplistic manner?

We are seeking an outstanding External Relations Professional with the right experience, media relationships, and insight to showcase the leadership of Watson Health and build its brand and reputation.

Watson Health is one of the newest and most dynamic businesses within IBM. We’re focused on applying next-generation technologies – data, analytics, AI and hybrid cloud – to change the face of healthcare as we know it. We know it won’t be easy and we’ve weathered some storms along the way, but the Watson Health team remains 100 percent committed to this mission. The convergence of data and technology is transforming healthcare and life science in every way. We aspire to improve lives and give hope by delivering innovation to address the world’s most pressing health challenges through data and cognitive insights.

Working with some of IBM’s most senior leaders, distinguished scientists, physicians, developers and engineers your role is pivotal in amplifying our progress and innovation around a burgeoning, strategic growth-play.

You should be someone who is creative and strategic, with a "sleeves rolled up" attitude; we’re a small, but close-knit, hands-on Communications team that enjoys tackling challenges together. Those who are successful in this role have strong writing chops, actively nurture mutually beneficial relationships with media, and exude real passion for storytelling - from concept through placement. You should demonstrate confidence and poise in the presence of C-level executives and offering management teams, and be able to actively cultivate mutually-beneficial relationships with media, analysts and influencers. We want you to be comfortable working both independently and in cross-company, multi-disciplinary teams in order to get things done.

  • Focus on telling the Watson Health story while demonstrating leadership in technologies such as AI, Data, Analytics and Cloud.

  • Craft and execute media and influencer strategies for dynamic outreach and differentiated narratives.

  • Develop written content, including strategic plans, blogs, pitches, press releases, and other thought leadership material.

  • Serve as a trusted communications advisor to senior executives within Watson Health and other spokespeople.

  • Collaborate with strategic and corporate communications extended teams to maintain cohesive messaging in support of global enterprise strategies.

  • Apply the Advocacy model to develop powerful storylines supported by facts, reason and examples that will excite and engage.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 8 years of experience in Media Relations, PR, or similar Communications roles.

  • Hold a number of connections with top-tier healthcare/IT and trade reporters, social media pundits and other industry influencers.

  • Hands-on experience working across myriad social platforms.

  • Demonstrated ability to work calmly and maintain good judgment in fast-paced, high-stress environments.

  • Working knowledge of the life sciences and/or healthcare industries.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Previous experience in a corporate and/or highly-matrixed environment.

  • A team-player; someone willing to roll up their sleeves and get it done.
