American Water Assistant Water Plant Operator and Maintenance in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The Assistant Operator/Maintenance role will be responsible for assisting the plant operator in ensuring the smooth operations of the water treatment plant. The Assistant Operator/Maintenance will perform regular checks on plant assets, chemical feed pumps, pump stations, and will perform some maintenance within the plant.
This role does require a rotating schedule as follows:
5 days @ 10:00pm - 6:00am
- 2 days off
5 days @ 6:00am - 2:00pm
- 1 day off
5 days @ 2:00pm - 10:00pm
- 2 days off
Assists the operator in the safe operation of the water treatment plant.
Assists the operator in making all necessary water treatment control tests and calculations to control water treatment and pumpage to provide potable water necessary to meet system demands.
Replaces the operator during vacations, sickness, or other absences.
Unloads and handles chemicals, sets manual chemical adjustments, and performs light maintenance and required cleaning.
Reads and interprets all charts, gauges, graphs and other devices (SCADA) normally used in operating a water treatment facility.
Maintains, repairs and installs mechanical and electrical equipment such as pumps, motors, switchgear, storage tanks, compressors, intake screens, chemical feed equipment and other maintenance work. Works with maintenance personnel in the repair and installation of equipment as required.
Makes inspection trips to the pumping and treatment facilities and reports on plant conditions; makes corrections as required by conditions.
Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge / Skills
Excellent math, basic hydraulics, and technical skills. Able to distinguish colors. Background in maintenance, repair, and installation of mechanical, electrical and related equipment.

Experience / Education
Minimum High School Diploma/GED
Experience in water treatment plant or related field preferred.
Must obtain PA Class A Water Operator license within 24 months of hire
Licenses & Certifications
Valid PA Driver’s license.
Rotating shift position.
