Kaiser Permanente CLINIC LABORATORY ASSISTANT (Phlebotomy Required) in Portland, Oregon

To provide support for routine clinic laboratory functions such as specimen processing, shipping, and maintenance of supplies and equipment.

Essential Functions:

  • Process blood and urine specimens accurately, according to complex research protocols and OSHA requirements. Prepare specimens for transporting and shipping. Use appropriate computer programs to assist in data collection, tracking, ordering laboratory tests or procedures, or communication, such as RRS, Health Connect, study specific programs, PAS, and other computer software as needed.

  • Under the supervision of the Lab Coordinator perform routine maintenance and quality control checks on lab and clinic equipment, per protocol, and requirements for state certification of the Lab. Support accurate record keeping by maintaining equipment and research study logs, maintaining equipment files.

  • Maintain the clinic/lab area by ensuring appropriate levels of supplies by maintaining an adequate inventory, ordering, receiving stock and non-stock deliveries through purchasing or specific order.

  • Clean and maintain lab, exam room and storeroom per clinic standards, procedures and study protocols; straighten exam rooms daily assuring that all supplies needed for protocol visits are available for staff use.

Collect and package the hazardous waste for disposal using OSHA requirements.

  • Provide support of receptionist area during non-peak lab periods, such as greeting participants, making appointments, processing paperwork, filing, running errands, and answering phones as needed.

  • Under technical supervision, perform selected testing according to CLIA Regulations. Perform other duties as requested.

Basic Qualifications:


  • Minimum one (1) years of laboratory experience in specimen processing.

  • Clinical trials experience.


  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Phlebotomy skills along with experience in clinical research in out- or in-patient clinical setting.

  • CPR certified within the past year.

  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Thorough knowledge of universal precautions as related to exposure to blood and body fluids.

  • Working knowledge of computer and key board skills.

  • Operation of Omnifuge.

  • Maintaining inventory of lab or clinical supplies.
