Kaiser Permanente Genetics Counselor, Perinatology, West Interstate Medical Offices in Portland, Oregon

Genetic counselor responsibility is to coordinate, administer, and deliver medical genetics services to health plan members. Duties may involve all areas of medical genetics including prenatal, pediatric, adult, and cancer. Genetic counselors work in collaboration with MD and PhD geneticists, and with their support and supervision. This position also requires the ability to collaborate with and share clinical genetics expertise with multiple departments and providers.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide genetic counseling for individuals and families.

  • Coordinate Genetics clinics

  • Review of patient chart, including investigation of outside records

  • Obtain and assess family history. This may include review of family member test results.

  • Provide recurrence risk assessment

  • Provide recommendations for medical or genetic testing based on analysis of the risk, benefit and cost.

  • Provide crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling to members upon discovery of unexpected findings (e.g., fetal malformations, biochemical disorders)

  • Review implications of genetic disorders and discuss options with member and/or family members. Makes referrals for ongoing care and support.

  • Provide case management for complex genetic cases including care coordination, medical recommendations and management plans, testing, and ongoing counseling.

  • Conduct literature search on rare genetic diseases

  • Maintain awareness of new developments in the field.

  • Development and presentation of in-service education to physicians and other health professionals

  • Development of patient educational materials

  • Provide recommendation for and implementation of enhanced clinical practice standards.

  • Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as necessary for the provision of genetics services to the region

Basic Qualifications:


  • N/A


  • Masters degree in Genetic Counseling, Human Genetics, or related field from an accredited genetic counseling training program.

License, Certification, Registration

  • Board eligible or certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) as a Genetic Counselor.

  • Current Washington state genetic counselor licensure, or eligibility to obtain licensure.

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a genetic counselor preferred.
