How will you make an impact?

The Continuous Improvement Manager is responsible for enabling Practical Process Improvement Business System maturity within the Anatomical Pathology Division (APD) Portsmouth Site including a wide breadth of strategic, continuous improvement and cultural development systems, processes and tools. This includes the development and implementation of the strategic plan through goal/policy deployment, strategy-development and operational planning processes (e.g. SIOP) to enable organic growth, intensify the customer experience, and increase overall employee engagement. The role is responsible for working with senior leadership and all levels of the organization to rapidly deploy and mature the PPI-Lean Enterprise elements at the Portsmouth site and others within APD, eventually moving to the extended value streams by connecting with customers and strategic suppliers. Other areas of focus will include developing the organization’s effectiveness and responsiveness relative to coaching, decision-making and problem solving via the Practical Process Improvement 8-Step method

Additionally, the role will work with the leadership to meet its key initiatives. Examples include:

  • Improving factory footprint utilization

  • Accelerating low cost manufacturing and distribution capability

  • Driving customer focused improvements in the Customer Service, Technical Service and Sales functions resulting in improved Customer Allegiance Scores (CAS)

  • Improving the process to identify, develop, teach/coach and upgrade Operations Talent

  • Accelerating productivity/efficiency throughout the value stream (supplier to Thermo Fisher to customer)

  • Optimizing Thermo Fisher Transportation and Logistics capabilities

  • Supporting R&D with time to market and manufacturability

What will you do?

  • In alignment with the Divisional Practical Process Improvement Business System Strategic Roadmap, Corporate Implementation Framework and the Portsmouth annual strategic plan, develop the annual Portsmouth specific Practical Process Improvement Business System strategy deployment and lean implementation

  • In conjunction with the Portsmouth Lean Core Team and the Divisional Practical Process Improvement Business System Director, successfully execute the Practical Process Improvement Business System strategy deployment action items

  • Challenge organizational leaders and cultivate an action-biased culture of continuous improvement and accountability to improve KPIs, in the areas of customer, finance, people and quality. This includes radically intensifying the customer experience, delivering profitable growth (organic growth, reduced costs, increasing cash velocity), and building/developing the best teams.

  • Establish and mature the Lean Leadership tools (tiered daily management systems, visual management, leader standard work and gemba walks) and other coaching tools to transform the culture.

  • Take a structured approach to optimize footprint utilization, grow capacity and reduce costs (3P, Strategic Sourcing, etc.)

  • Provide ‘Sensei-type’ coaching to facility leadership and representatives to develop their Lean expertise over time, ultimately moving the critical sites to self-sufficiency. Establish structured development plans with key resources and leaders within the organization from a PPI Business System perspective.

  • Simplify and improve the decision-making model and problem solving accountabilities and capabilities to drive autonomy to the lowest appropriate levels of the organization.

  • Work closely with business leadership and Practical Process Improvement steering committees to identify ways to accelerate the culture change necessary to support the PPI Business System.

  • Provide ongoing Lean support to multiple teams at multiple facilities.

  • Identify best practices within the company, and outside of Thermo Fisher, and serve as a conduit for best-practice sharing.

  • Partner with other Site Practical Process Improvement Business System Managers to manage and support cross-Site improvement activity

How will you get here?

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, science, operations or business

  • MBA preferred

  • A Lean Expert with significant, hands-on track record of implementing successful TPS-based business systems including elements such as:

  • A3 Thinking/Strategy Deployment

  • Lean Leadership through Visual Management, Daily Management, Leader Standard Work, and Gemba Walks (Go see, show respect and ask why?)

  • Value-stream mapping and follow-up transformation using kaizen to dramatically improve cell design, material flow, visual factory, etc.

  • Experience with 3P (Production Preparation Process) to optimize layout and product design

  • 5 to 7 years of experience in process improvement preferred

  • Broad leadership roles from disciplines such as commercial, engineering, quality, or product management preferred

  • Shingo prize/assessment tools and process knowledge preferred

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence senior leadership, along with all levels of the organization

  • A holistic thinker who can look enterprise-wide to develop/implement plans to integrate supply chains from the customer through the strategic suppliers and define/pursue step-change scenarios

  • Able to drive strategic thinking and continuous improvement in non-operational areas, including connecting the cross-functional resources to remove waste/grow along the extended value streams.

  • Passion for driving business improvement and leading change in a large, complex, global environment

  • Coaching alignment between strategic business plans and lean transformation plans, (i.e. Strategic A3’s/X-Matrices, Value Stream Analysis, Lean Assessments)

  • Broad knowledge of multi-functional, multi-site, global organizational processes and financial business methods (SIOP, Customer Connections, Strategic Sourcing, etc.)

  • Proven track record for developing, training, and coaching employee teams in a continuous improvement environment

  • Significant operations leadership experience with proven results

  • Great communicator, including accomplished written, oral and presentational skills.

  • High ethical standards to support a professional business code of conduct

  • Able to travel domestically and internationally (minimal travel required)
