The Inpatient Oncology Unit RN will use assessment skills to provide highly specialized nursing care to terminally ill and convalescing oncology patients who require close observation to identify subtle changes in their condition.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee and provide direct patient care, foster the growth of less experienced staff, and facilitate an interdisciplinary team concept.
Assure that comprehensive plans of care are implemented based on individualized application of the nursing process, including early identification of patients’ emotional and discharge planning needs.
Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and collaborate with team members to ensure patient’s needs are addressed across the continuum of care, and that the plan of care is revised based on the patients’ response to care regimen delivered.
Identify and respond quickly and appropriately to changes in patients’ conditions. Assume leadership role as needed in emergency situations; delegate and technically direct others in a calm and effective manner.
Oversee the use of equipment in the care of patients for proper, safe and effective use. Identify equipment malfunctions; ensure faulty equipment is removed from service and restored to working order, and that required reports are filed according to Command and Unit policy and procedure. Evaluate the effectiveness of equipment and make recommendations for procurement or upgrade. Set up, operate and monitor equipment used in the care of patients.
Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in order to give easily understood directions to subordinates and obtains feedback to determine level of understanding. Encourage and promote two way communications with colleagues and patients
Ensure that established documentation protocols are followed.
Identify assignments based on patient acuity, unique needs of the patient, equipment requirements, and competency of staff and recommend changes based on their experience and patient needs.
Provide wound management, nutritional guidance, and psychological support to patients and families.
Assume leadership role in emergent situations, as required; delegate and technically direct others in a calm and effective manner.
Teach in a manner that is easily understood and appropriate to the level of the audience.
Provide emotional support and appropriate crisis intervention to patients and families.
Instruct patients about the purpose for and the effects of chemotherapy, prevention and management of side effects of chemotherapy, early recognition and management options for complications of chemotherapy.
Administer and dispose of chemotherapy substances and supplies according to relevant standards and policies.
Correlate physical assessment and laboratory data with the side effects of the various drugs.
Serve as a staff resource for knowledge of both external and implantable venous devices and provide patient and family instruction on venous access devices; draw specimens and administer fluids and medications through these lines.
Administer chemotherapy to patients being treated under scientific research and experimental therapy protocols, as directed by the ordering provider.
Participate in medical/occupational health surveillance.
Promote interdepartmental cooperation.
Attend daily inpatient rounds, as requested

Minimum Qualifications : (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)
Shall have a diploma, Associates or Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited college or University.
Possess a minimum of one (1) year of experience within the last two (2) years as an RN working in an oncology setting administering chemotherapy agents.
Possess and maintain certification as a Chemotherapy Provider by the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS).
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Be able clearly and effectively communicate with all patients and other healthcare providers.
Possess knowledge of the pharmacology of most commonly used emergency drugs, anticipated results, usual dosages, and their location in the crash cart.

The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.
During visits to areas of operations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
