Summary:

TheMedical Laboratory Technicianassists in routine care and treatment of patients. Organizes the medical environment, performs and participates in support activities for outpatient care situations, including contingency operations and disasters.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:(Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position)

  • Perform clinical laboratory tests in any one (1) or a combination of areas as described in following sections of the laboratory: hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, microbiology and blood bank.

  • Calculate test results and measure prescribed quantities of samples during tests.

  • Notice pertinent details of specimens under microscopic study.

  • Perform a wide variety of laboratory tests either manually or using automated instrumentation.

  • Evaluate information against measurable criteria in the performance of laboratory tests.

  • Perform precise and accurate laboratory testing according to established laboratory procedures.

  • Receive written requisitions from health care providers for routine and special laboratory tests.

  • Set up and adjust laboratory equipment and apparatus.

  • Obtain laboratory specimens directly from patients by venipuncture.

  • Add reagents or indicator solutions, and subject specimens to various laboratory operations according to established procedures.

  • Prepare slides for microscopic analysis as necessary.

  • Observe test reactions, changes of color, or formation of precipitates; studies or subjects treated specimens to automatic analyzing equipment to make qualitative and quantitative analysis.

  • Record test results to flat logs and request slips and file reports in the CHCS/AHLTA.

  • Bring to the attention of the section government supervisor, pathologist or general laboratory government supervisor any unusual or grossly abnormal test result.

  • Prepare specimens for transport to MTF laboratory or for mail out.

  • Prepare biological waste for proper disposal.

  • Participate/perform the prescribed Quality Control (QC)/College of American Pathology (CAP) programs.

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)

  • Graduation from a medical laboratory technician training program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).

  • A current certification and registration as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (MLT-ASCP);

Or a current certification and registration as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Medical Technologists (MLT-AMT).

  • A current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • The following knowledge is mandatory:

  • Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology; nursing theory, techniques and procedures; team nursing; patient needs; emergency medical treatment to include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, aseptic technique, medical ethics, and legal aspects; prescription drugs and their administration; operating and maintaining therapeutic equipment, military hygiene and sanitation; risk management, contingency operations, disaster preparedness, and chemical warfare; and transportation of sick and wounded.

  • Vaccination procedures; methods of properly administering intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections; allergen identification; composition of various vaccines; mechanisms of anaphylaxis and shock and their treatment; and pharmacology of various drug groups.
