- The Medical Laboratory Technician assists in routine care and treatment of patients. Organizes the medical environment, performs and participates in support activities for outpatient care situations, including contingency operations and disasters.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform clinical laboratory tests in any one (1) or a combination of areas as described in following sections of the laboratory: hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, microbiology and blood bank.
Calculate test results and measure prescribed quantities of samples during tests.
Notice pertinent details of specimens under microscopic study.
Perform a wide variety of laboratory tests either manually or using automated instrumentation.
Evaluate information against measurable criteria in the performance of laboratory tests.
Perform precise and accurate laboratory testing according to established laboratory procedures.
Receive written requisitions from health care providers for routine and special laboratory tests.
Set up and adjust laboratory equipment and apparatus.
Obtain laboratory specimens directly from patients by venipuncture.
Add reagents or indicator solutions, and subject specimens to various laboratory operations according to established procedures.
Prepare slides for microscopic analysis as necessary.
Observe test reactions, changes of color, or formation of precipitates; studies or subjects treated specimens to automatic analyzing equipment to make qualitative and quantitative analysis.
Record test results to flat logs and request slips and file reports in the CHCS/AHLTA.
Bring to the attention of the section government supervisor, pathologist or general laboratory government supervisor any unusual or grossly abnormal test result.
Prepare specimens for transport to MTF laboratory or for mail out.
Prepare biological waste for proper disposal.
Participate/perform the prescribed Quality Control (QC)/College of American Pathology (CAP) programs.
Conduct patient in-processing prior to specimen collection, including review of paperwork accompanying patients and cordial guidance and assistance, as well as ensuring proper specimen identification and labeling.
Seek clarification of duties when indicated. Seek and obtain knowledge regarding specialized tests.
Interact with other employees and supervisor to provide efficient specimen processing service to patients.
Perform proper venipuncture, finger-stick and heel-stick procedures using appropriate techniques.
Performs routine and specialized test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols. Prepares, processes and/or performs testing on specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiological properties of the sample are maintained. Determines suitability of specimens for analysis, requesting new specimens if determined to be unusable. Prepares, processes and/or performs testing on standards, proficiency specimens, controls, solutions, and reagents.
Support a comprehensive Quality Control program on all procedures and reagents, ensuring technical and scientific accuracy of tests and procedures performed. Performs initial review of quality control data so as to recognize departures from expected results and identifies shifts, trends, and/or bias in testing procedures.
Performs primary review of patient results. Identifies unusual and/or discrepant values and initiates appropriate follow-up procedures to correct problems. Correlates data with other laboratory findings and/or patient history to verify results
Fully document all samples obtained per the laboratory’s standard operating procedures.

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)
Possess an Associate Degree or higher in a Laboratory Science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution.
Have a minimum of one (1) year of full-time experience within the preceding (2) two years as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
Pass an initial training competency assessment, the six (6) month post initial competency assessment and an annual competency assessment. These tests are normally administered by NMC Portsmouth’s Laboratory Department, in accordance with local policies.
A current certification and registration as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (MLT-ASCP); Or a current certification and registration as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Medical Technologists (MLT-AMT).
A current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
Provide two (2) letters of recommendation written within the last two (2) years attesting to the HCW’s clinical skills. At least one (1) letter must be from a physician or nurse who has personally observed and evaluated the HCW and who can attest to the HCW’s clinical skills in the care of patients. The other letter may be from a clinic or hospital administrator, physician, nurse or peer who has personal knowledge of the HCW’s patient care skills in a similar clinical environment. Reference letters shall attest to the HCW’s communication skills and ability to relate to patients as well as professional and other interpersonal skills among staff members and must include name, title, phone number, date of reference, address and signature of the individual providing reference.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology; nursing theory, techniques and procedures; team nursing; patient needs; emergency medical treatment to include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, aseptic technique, medical ethics, and legal aspects; prescription drugs and their administration; operating and maintaining therapeutic equipment, military hygiene and sanitation; risk management, contingency operations, disaster preparedness, and chemical warfare; and transportation of sick and wounded.
Vaccination procedures; methods of properly administering intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections; allergen identification; composition of various vaccines; mechanisms of anaphylaxis and shock and their treatment; and pharmacology of various drug groups.
