Role Summary

The Senior Research Manager of Packaging will lead a critical new area of the Packaging Development program at Church and Dwight. The successful candidate will work close with internal teams as well as external suppliers. The candidate should have strong knowledge of packaging materials, Lifecycle Analysis and the sustainable implications of various Packaging forms. The senior manager will collaborate with Marketing, Regulatory and Legal on the development of viable product concepts and on identifying areas of opportunity.

Accountabilities will include:

  • Finding innovative new packaging solutions, leveraging new and existing suppliers and external resources within the Church and Dwight Open Innovation framework

  • Support Church and Dwight packaging concepts from initiation through manufacturing feasibility ( Proof of Principle ).

  • Influencing internal and external Packaging relationships.

  • Supporting Corporate Sustainability and Consumer Experience Improvements across all company brands.

  • Lead Sustainability metrics definition and monitoring for internal and external business communication

  • Work with Marketing and R&D innovation teams to review Lifecycle Analysis implications and promote Sustainable package for future launches

Broad scope projects will include consideration of new, exploratory platforms for next-generational packaging, designs tools, packaging materials and manufacturing processes.

The individual will need to drive their team to find solutions to Packaging problems, manage multiple priorities and expectations, and deliver to those expectations

The role must define an ambitious packaging innovation portfolio and successfully transfer all projects to development teams, assuring that quality and consumer expectations are met.

The individual will work with cross functional business leaders to better define Packaging development strategy and will also work closely with quality, finance, procurement, regulatory, engineering, operations, consultants and outside vendors.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and partner with a team of junior and senior engineers, providing leadership, project definition and delegation of activities against agreed objectives

  • Execute multiple projects within budgetary scope for Sustainability and Improved Consumer Experience.

  • Recommend and assess feasibility of new technologies and identify critical success drivers for the team

  • Management of several complex projects with independence

  • Coordinate with the department’s senior management to define and prioritize goals & objectives.

  • Coordination of Sustainability qualification programs for new packaging designs and materials

  • Travel to vendor and manufacturing locations for support of project activities

  • Manage hiring, skill set gaps, development of the team and conduct performance reviews of direct reports and wider team

Requirements:

The successful candidate should be a highly seasoned professional with a minimum of fifteen years of experience in product/packaging development. Additional experience should include managerial responsibility.

The candidate should have a minimum of a BS degree in Packaging Engineering. Alternate qualifications could include Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or other Engineering sciences.

The candidate’s experience must clearly demonstrate background in the following areas:

  • Experience in management of teams or acted as Team Leader

  • Solid awareness of the latest technologies in Sustainability, the relevant guidelines and policies for packaging recyclability as well as NGOs driving industry change

  • Participate in panels, presentations and Sustainability working groups.

  • Understanding of lifecycle analysis (LCA) metrics and software as well as Sustainability metrics and reporting

  • Subject Matter expertise on several packaging technologies

  • Experience in development for new product launches

  • Experience of departmental projects, resources and budget

  • Coordination and completion of qualification programs of new packaging components and assemblies

  • Fully developed skills in project management and experienced, cross-functional interactions
