PURPOSEResponsible for all procedures involved in the processing of surgical specimens; embedding of tissues, microtomy of tissues, staining of the prepared slides and presentation to the Pathologist for diagnosis. Works under the direct supervision of the Pathologist and general supervision of the Laboratory Technical Director.
JOB RELATIONSHIPReports toLab Medical Director, Technical Director and Assistant Tech. Director. V. Job Functions 1. Receives specimens from the operating room, nursing units, or outpatient specimens. Assigns numbers to specimens and accurately logs them in the Histology Accession Book. 2. Accurately processes charges for tissues and special stains performed. 3. Sets up tissues for grossing by Pathologist and sets tissue processor after specimens have been processed in. 4. Assumes responsibility for embedding, microtomy, and routine or special staining of tissues. 5. Prepares all cytology specimens (smears and blocks) on a timely basis. 6. Cuts and stains frozen sections on a timely basis. 7. Assists willingly with autopsies. 8. Assumes responsibility for changing solutions on the tissue processor, changing the staining solutions and the preparation of all stock solutions and other stains. 9. Processes basic theoretical and operation job knowledge in the technical and procedural aspects of histology/cytology and exhibits independent interpretation in evaluating results. 10. Performs routine as well as technically demanding test with high level of competency and on a timely basis.
QUALIFICATIONSEducation: Courses in biology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry and histology helpful. Licensure: Current A.S.C.P. registration as Histology Technician, or eligible. Experience: Must be proficient in all areas of histology/cytology
