    For high-risk pregnancies and childbirths at Johnston-Willis Hospital, we maintain a20-bed Level IIINeonatal Intensive Care Unit(NICU),multiple maternal-fetal medicine specialists, and 24/7 Neonatologist coverage.

    In addition to the NICU, ourMaternal Infant Unit includes a 24-bed Labor Delivery Recovery Postpartum (LDRP),with spacious rooms our patients remain in for the duration of their stay. We also have3 overflow Postpartum rooms, a Nursery, and 2 Obstetrics (OB) Operating Rooms (OR).

For the community we offeroutreacheducation programs and classes such as Preparation for Labor, Labor Basics, Baby Basics, Breast-Feeding Classes and Support Group, Postpartum Support Group, Sibling Class, and Class for Multiples.

    The Registered Nurse in the NICUwill perform care under the direction of the unit Nursing Leadership Team and the Director.

    1. Demonstrates knowledge of pathophysiology for common neonatal disorders.

    2. Performs clinical nursing duties for neonates and infants according to policy and procedures. Maintains patient individualized standards of care.

    3. Performs neonatal assessment and provides appropriate interventions.

    4. Recognizes and responds promptly and appropriately to acute changes in neonate/infant’s condition. Responds appropriately to emergency situations in NICU and other hospital departments.

    5. Recognizes developmental stages of neonates and infants and provides appropriate support to maximize infant’s developmental outcome.

    6. Provides support and teaching to the family unit.

    7. Communicates effectively with all members of the health care team utilizing verbal and written skills.

    8. Demonstrates effective leadership abilities in clinical situations.

    9. Administers medication following policy and procedure demonstrating the 5 rights and knowledge of pharmacokinetics.

    EDUCATION:

    • Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program (required)

    • BSN or current enrollment in a BSN program at an accredited school of Nursing (preferred) LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:

    • Licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Virginia as a Registered Nurse (required)

    • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider (required)

    • ACLS, PALS, and NRP certification (preferred) EXPERIENCE :

    • At least 1 year of experience in NICU (required)

    • 2 years of NICU experience (preferred)
