The Senior Instructional Designer is responsible for defining, designing & implementing training & knowledge management strategies that directly support the delivery of the operations strategic plan. Responsibilities are primarily focused on, but not limited to:

  • building strong partnerships with business leaders, field & home office associates, SME’s, suppliers and others to identify key areas where advanced training, knowledge management or other talent management solutions are required to meet business objectives

  • serving as an expert instructional design consultant, partnering with the business area to develop training solutions optimizing methods, channels and other factors in facilitating field associate and manager training programs

  • supporting large-scale department-specific projects or companywide initiatives (ex: update / maintain photo studio training materials)

  • managing design & delivery of training, knowledge management or other talent management programs through direct or indirect reporting relationships (ex: driving GO training through select SME’s)

As a leader within the corporate training community, this individual will create curricula and materials aligned with corporate training strategies and lead the integration of this material into CarMax’s overall training strategy and initiatives where appropriate.


Directly supports the development and deployment of the department talent management strategy through specific training programs in support of overall business goals

  • Leverages professional skills, internal & external relationships and in-depth understanding of current environment to support program development

  • Partners with field and other resources to clearly define opportunity/root cause, then leads creation of workable solutions that deliver measurable, sustainable results

  • Develops measurable outcomes, partnering with others to develop appropriate measurement systems to assess training strategy impact

  • Makes recommendations and adjusts training processes, programs and materials to improve effectiveness and appropriately satisfy stakeholder needs

  • Determines appropriate instructional methods such as self-paced

training, group instruction, simulation exercises, role plays, computer

based training and other alternatives to optimize cost, quality, speed and measurable impact to business objectives

Collaborates with appropriate subject matter experts to develop and maintain training and communication materials such as workbooks, facilitator guides, multimedia/web based courses, computer tutorials, videos, case studies and reference guides

  • Analyzes learning needs and partners with subject matter experts to provide input on course/knowledge content

  • Plans and coordinates skills assessments, knowledge organization & storage, training and other materials continually adapting approach to optimize ease of use and business impact

  • Support / manage the KMX Way – KMXU migration by supporting the end users ability to easily locate appropriate documents

Partners with stakeholders to provide strategic instructional direction

  • Facilitates training during introduction to new courses

  • Monitors and analyzes training programs by examining learner’s satisfaction levels, proficiency testing, job performance & overall measurable business impact

  • Directly supports larger scale projects as training/talent management subject matter/design/delivery expert

  • Up to date on latest training methods and practices used in leading companies


  • 3+ years’ experience in instructional design and application.

  • Experience supporting Lean or Six Sigma initiative delivery a plus

  • Proficient in Training design/development

  • Proficient in educational methods and application for adult learning

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel

  • MS Project, MS Access, OnTrack for Training, relational databases and web-based development software (eg. Captivate, Macromedia products) a plus
