The Contracts Management and Claims Team (CMCT) sits within the Integrated Gas, Projects and New Energies Centre of Excellence supporting all projects across all Royal Dutch Shell business lines. Working as an extended part of the frontline teams, and in close cooperation with the Projects Maturation Teams, the CMCT aims to enhance contract management capability to create and preserve value in capital contracting across RDS. The CMCT is a team of specialist professionals, matching the expertise of our suppliers, to reduce risk, drive savings and create additional value across projects.

From supporting mega-projects in execute to the coaching of colleagues new to projects the CMCT is truly a unique space for you to deliver and develop in a role with a global reach and exposure to senior stakeholders. This is a role with a strong connect to the projects we support, allowing for a good CoE and front-line work mix. The current team members are in the Netherlands, United Kingdom and the United States.

What’s the role?

The role of the Projects Contracts advisor can include:

  • Mitigate risk through early identification of potential contractual issues through Invitation to tender reviews, scenario testing, post award contract management etc;

  • Pro-actively assist project teams throughout the sourcing, award and execution phases, including contract development, leading negotiations and claims avoidance;

  • In close cooperation with legal, develop strong but fit for purpose model contracts, reflecting Shell’s latest risk distribution guidelines and keep a strong implementation learning loop active on these models. Support front line teams in negotiating the model with pre-agreed fall-back positions and other support;

  • Reduce settlement value for disputes and claims by providing claim resolution advice;

  • Increase commercial and claims awareness for project teams by developing and presenting customized training to CP and project management staff;

  • Support the collation, development and dissemination of claims and contract management guidance and best practices in the global CP Projects community;

  • Coach CP staff continuously in contract management and claims management through the daily interactions and Project activities, to support the development of commercial skills and competencies;

  • Support initiatives such as Focused Contracting as part of the new Project Delivery Model and HSE assessment methodology review.


  • Support all businesses in Shell, including New Energies which also from a CP perspective requires largely an EPC/ project contracting skillset;

  • Support all contract types such as lump sum, reimbursable or major unit rate fabrication contracts;

  • Provide credible contract management support to frontline teams across Royal Dutch Shell’s material and flagship projects portfolio;

  • Actively support the management of projects contracts with a value ranging from USD 100m to several billion dollars;

  • Responsible for provision of advice to a range of stakeholders (internal and external to RDS) on complex contractual issues;

  • Due to the global nature of the role some travel is required to directly support project teams;

What we need from you

  • Legal, Quantity Surveying, supply chain management, Business Administration or Engineering degree or equivalent;

  • Substantial commercial/ contract management experience in oil and gas, infrastructure or heavy engineering. EPC Contractor work experience would be beneficial;

  • Knowledge and experience in post award projects contract management, contract law and various forms of contract;

  • An in-depth understanding of CP management processes/tools and contract terms & conditions, legal background or training would be beneficial;

  • Knowledge, and preferably experience of, dispute resolution procedures e.g. mediation, arbitration;

  • Knowledge of the project services function such as planning, cost estimating and cost control

  • High level of integrity and a role model of ethical behaviour;

  • Experience in communicating and delivering commercial solutions in different cultural environments and at different organizational levels. (Project Directors, Business VPs, EC). Opportunity exists in role to further enhance these key skills;

  • Facilitation and presentation skills. Opportunity exists in role to further enhance these key skills.;

  • Ability to develop into a Subject Matter Expert in contract management and claims prevention and management;

  • Experience and capability in continuous improvement;

  • Personal skills to coach and support knowledge transfer working with less experienced staff in a friendly and collaborative environment.
