Position Summary: The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a professional nurse, who as a result of both in-depth clinical expertise and graduate education, possesses the advanced knowledge and mastery of clinical skills necessary to provide expert nursing to patients receiving care within the continuum. The major roles of the CNS include expert clinical practice; leadership; education; consultation; and research. The CNS will influence patient outcomes through comprehensive management and individualized care using in-depth knowledge of natural sciences, behavioral sciences and clinical expertise. The CNS will demonstrate evidence of initiative, creativity, responsibility, accountability, autonomy, and flexibility in problem solving, as well as demonstrate good written and verbal communication, interpersonal relationship, and leadership skills. The CNS functions autonomously and in collaboration with other health care professionals, demonstrating self-direction and accountability in the development and implementation of the role. Position Requirements: Licensure/ Certification/ Registration:
Current California License as a Registered Nurse
Masters prepared, licensed Clinical Nurse Specialist
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
Specialty certification (i.e., CCRN, CNRN, SCRN), preferred Education:
The clinical nurse specialist (CNS) is a registered professional nurse who has completed a formal educational program at the Master’s level with additional specialized training and education in advanced nursing practice.
Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist by the State of California. Experience:
Five years acute care experience in a Stroke Centers Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department, or Stroke Unit.
Recent experience functioning as a CNS in a clinical setting. Special Qualifications:
Leadership, problem solving skills, flexibility, judgment, teamwork, interactive skills, work habits, productivity, and customer service.
Knowledge of current theory, principle/procedures and injury prevention concepts specific to populations.
Skill in providing care to neuro/stroke patients and their families.
Setting and monitoring the delivery of evidence-based patient care standards and making recommendations for changes in clinical practice.
Guiding /directing nursing staff in assessing patient/family age-specific nursing needs and developing interdisciplinary plans of care for complex and high-risk patients.
Collaborating with assigned nursing staff and other ancillary services to identify patients needs and to serve as a role model to demonstrate expected clinical practice.
Collaboration focusing on multidisciplinary team building.
