Job Description


Provide a variety of Paralegal support to the Assistant United States Attorney(s) (“AUSA”),


  • Assist legal support staff with opening and closing of criminal case files. Assists legal support staff with data entry into the CaseView docketing system.

  • Assist attorneys in trial preparation and organization of pre-trial discovery, organization of witness files, interviewing and securing presence of witnesses, researching and drafting of pretrial motions, jury instructions and stipulations.

  • Assist prosecutors and legal support staff in organizing voluminous case information. Generally, the legal administrative specialists will scan, load, and index documents into a litigation case management database and bate stamped as needed. Assure documents are organized for efficient automated storage and retrieval by preparing appropriate indices, defining data file search criteria and indexing/coding fields. Smaller cases may be paper-based, in which case the legal administrative specialist will maintain the paper case file.

  • Assist the AUSA in gathering and analyzing evidence and preparation of its presentation at pre-trial hearings and trial, including assisting legal support staff with the preparation of grand jury and trial subpoenas for review by the AUSA. Provides litigation case management and organizes cases for court presentation by preparing and organizing exhibits. May be required to be physically present in court during pre-trial hearings and trial.

  • Prepare photo boards, maps, charts and other exhibits required for litigation.

  • Assemble trial notebooks for use by prosecutors, judges, defense counsel and witnesses.

  • Load electronic version of exhibits and other trial material into case presentation software and ready presentation for court.

  • Set up IT and audiovisual equipment for electronic courtroom presentation and run presentation during trial or hearing.

  • Perform detailed and specialized legal research including complex issues and legislative history, case decisions and providing case precedent. Submits prepared legal documents on the ECF filing system. Verifies citations and legal references on all prepared legal documents. Ensures proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar on all prepared documents.

  • Produce quality written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications. Examples: assignments may include integrating output from different software types, e.g., tables produced by database applications and charts and graphs produced by electronic spreadsheet applications, into word processing or desk top publishing text. Products include complicated tables, graphs and charts which may be incorporated into legal documents or courtroom presentations.


  • Paralegal certificate is preferred.

  • At least one year of paralegal experience required.

  • Automated litigation support and trial experience is very helpful.

  • A basic knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation system sufficient to perform basic legal research.

  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills and have a thorough knowledge of legal research tools.

  • Hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, legal research databases, spreadsheet and telecommunications.
