This position is responsible for supporting the Engineer who is managing packaging projects from concept to execution. Projects will involve the creation of innovative customer driven packaging and packaging platforms to drive US Foods Brands profitable growth and overall business success as well as improve efficiencies, performance and cost.

About the US Foods Summer Intern Program

The US Foods Summer Internship Program provides a forum for students to apply classroom skills and academic training in a real world business environment. In addition to being assigned business-impacting projects throughout the summer, students will be matched with a manager who will meet with them on a regular basis to provide direction on assignments as well as deliver performance feedback and a mentor who will be available to offer day-to-day guidance and support.

Interns will also get exposure to US Foods executive leadership; have an opportunity to participate in learning and social events with other interns across business functions within our Corporate HQ; and have an opportunity to deliver an end of summer presentation to showcase their accomplishments with key business leaders. Dependent upon critical business needs and overall performance during the summer, there may be opportunities for students to continue working as a part-time intern during the school year.

Please note: We are unable to provide internships to students that require sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B visa status). Candidates who possess the unqualified right to work in the United States are eligible to apply.

Local candidates are encouraged to apply. For qualified students whose permanent home of record is located outside 50 miles from US Foods Corporate HQ, a stipend will be offered to partially offset housing costs for the summer.

Hours: Full time (40 hours per week) during the summer and fall (6 months); possible future part-time opportunities (16-24 hours per week) during the school year, dependent upon current critical business needs and overall performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist the Packaging Engineer to develop, approve and commercialize packaging for new products, line extensions and new suppliers translating Category Management, Supplier needs, Operator learning, and technical expertise into effective packaging offerings to drive US Foods Exclusive Brands profitable growth. Use technical expertise to identify areas for package innovation, printer consolidation, improve profitability through both damage reduction and cost saving opportunities.

Increase consistency in materials, package design and print across the categories, brands, suppliers and platforms. Gain solid technical and business understanding of the competitive set, and emerging technology to help identify gap or opportunity areas for technical and printing point of difference for US Foods products.

Assure package integrity from prototype through successful commercialization by evaluating material selection, structural integrity, manufacturing and printing capabilities.

Maintain process for insuring that all packaging labeling in completed in a timely manner and conforms to applicable local, state and federal regulations while maintaining brand identity and color management established by graphics standards.

Clearly communicate USF's packaging and labeling requirements to suppliers, FSQA and Category Management. Establish and enforce packaging, printing and graphic specifications that meet corporate, regulatory, and consumer/customer needs, driving for spec ownership and proprietary advantage where applicable to protect investments and block competitive potential. Assist in development and enforcement of package graphic standards.

Work on teams with Packaging Science Lead, Category Management, Marketing, Brands, Creative Services, FSQA, Operations, Suppliers and Printers to meet company and project objectives, drive growth and assure aligned direction on priorities.

Participate in product cuttings, field engagement, working internally and also directly with external vendors, customers, USF partners etc. to leverage innovation potential.

Maintain awareness of new developments in Packaging, Processing Technology, Restaurant, Food Service, Printing practices, industry trends that could influence industry and product direction. Effectively incorporate this learning into business plans and to drive new idea potential.

Provide proper planning, execution and monitoring within function to assure project timeliness are managed and communicated with senior Packaging Engineer, peers and other stakeholders.

Qualifications-

Basic Requirements:

  • Pursuing Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging Science or related program. Completion of two or more years in said program is preferred.

  • Typically, students currently between their Junior and Senior years or between their 1st and 2nd years of graduate school will be considered for internships.

  • Must be available for a 6-month internship in Rosemont, IL

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must have regular, reliable method of transportation to commute to US Foods’ location

  • Must be able to sit/stand for long periods of time.

Preferred Skills:

  • Specific knowledge/experience in conducting scientific/analytical product testing preferred.
