_POSITION SUMMARY_: Under the direct supervision of the clinical manager and/or director, performs laboratory testing and related documentation functions accurately and in a timely manner to provide information for provision of patient care. Performs both routine and specialized test procedures requiring independent judgment. Oversees the technical functions of a laboratory section/shift. Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.
_ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES_:· Oversees the technical aspects of a section (s) of the laboratory. · Oversees the quality control activities for the technical section(s), ensuring that these activities are complete, accurately documented, performed and reported according to policy. · Ensures that all preventive maintenance and instrument performance checks are completed, performed and documented according to policy. · Ensures that the procedure manuals are reviewed at least annually and revised as needed; includes annual review by staff. · Works with Clinical Manager/Director to monitor compliance with accreditation requirements. · Trains other employees on the policies/procedures of that section(s). · Works with Clinical Manager/Director to formulate and implement policies and procedures for that section. · Demonstrates knowledge and expertise in techniques and theory in section(s). · Performs tests accurately and precisely according to policies/procedures. · Learns and adapts well to new instrumentation and techniques. · Assists with evaluation and implementation of new instrumentation and techniques. · Ensures that assay results are reported accurately and in a timely manner with appropriate reference values and/or interpretive comments. · Performs duties with minimal supervision, showing appropriate independent judgment. · Ensures timely availability of laboratory results and resolution of problems. · Organizes work area and workflow for efficiency of performance. · Ensures that turnaround times are acceptable. · Demonstrates good productivity by efficient use of time to complete testing and other duties required. · Prioritizes work appropriately according to relative importance and critical nature. · Ensures that critical values are reported and documented appropriately. · Investigates and resolves problems and appropriately documents. · Ensures the quality of analyses through quality control, quality assurance, and maintenance activity. · Ensures performance of quality control activities appropriate to each assay and responds to outlier results. · Ensures that section staff adhere to quality control policies/procedures and that their documentation is accurate and complete. · Participates and has staff participate in proficiency testing activities in each technical area for which the employee has responsibilities. · Participates in preventive maintenance and repair of instrumentation. · Ensures that calibrators, reagents and other materials are used appropriately. · Participates in personnel activities for the laboratory. · Trains new employees or those with less experience in a technical area and documents training appropriately. · Assists in development of competency materials for section staff. · Ensures that competency testing is administered to section staff on an annual basis. · Participates in continuing education activities. · Able to participate in interviews if desired. · Works with Clinical Manager to prepare schedules to provide adequate coverage for section. · Provides input for evaluation of section staff. · Ensures the safety of self and co-workers. · Ensures that all section staff review safety policies, procedures and practices at least annually and documents appropriately. · Practices safe work habits according to policies/procedures. · Maintains a clean and organized work area. · Ensures that staff use PPEs appropriately. · Ensures that appropriate communication occurs. · Utilizes various and appropriate means to communicate with section staff, other sr. techs, manager and director, i.e., email, communication board, etc. · Ensures that shift-to-shift communications are consistent and appropriate. · Communicates concerns/needs for section to Clinical Manager/Director. · Employee’s conduct must reflect the Company’s values and a commitment to the Code of Conduct ethics and compliance program. · Employee reflects SDH Service Excellence standards in every interaction.

_KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES_:
Must be able to demonstrate understanding of national patient safety initiatives by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures as required by both HCA and St. David’s North Austin Medical Center.

_EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE_:
Required: Graduate with a Bachelor's from an accredited institution Qualifies as a technologist under CLIA '88 to perform high complexity testing, one year clinical rotation or internship in an accredited medical technology program, or a 50-week military training course. Minimum of two years of clinical laboratory experience. Preferred: MT (ASCP) or equivalent *_ _*
