Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a Vice President of Systems Engineering, with deep experience in architecting distributed systems for high-availability, security, application resilience and across the global technology organization. In this role, you will work with both infrastructure and application teams to identify resiliency risks, uncover patterns affecting availability of the service, and identify opportunities to remediate and transform. Beyond technical expertise, the candidate must have experience successfully lead teams through very challenging engineering problems and a passion for continuous improvement.

  • Drive the long-range architecture and vision for continuously improving availability, resilience and optimizing costs

  • Analyze the critical activates that the students perform, and partner with head of user experience to develop techniques to ensure timely completion of the tasks.

  • Design and execute on programs to socialize findings and drive operational change

  • Partner with infrastructure and application engineers to architect solutions for public cloud deployments and embed with engineering teams to surface risks and opportunities

  • Work with teams on methods for destructive testing, failure testing, resilience testing, and chaos engineering

  • Build and maintain a high-performance team and collaborative matrix that consistently delivers planned results and scheduled projects.

  • Develop and deploy software that gracefully degrade customer experience under unexpected loads or other scenarios.

  • Develop KPIs and work with teams to continuously improve.

  • Use qualitative and quantitative data to inform recommendations and decisions

  • Report to senior executives on availability and resiliency risks, issues, and solutions

  • Act as a trusted adviser to global teams, internal customer service as well external stakeholders (faculty, administrators, etc.)


  • Proven experience in architecting for fault-tolerance, cloud, cloud security, elasticity, performance tuning, cost-effectiveness, etc.

  • Ability to assess and bring in new technology as needed to solve systems problems at scale, preferably with solid experience in AWS or other cloud environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead high-profile, complex projects and implement with the minimum disruption to end users.

  • Significant experience in leading technology teams at a senior executive level.

  • Strong experience working with systems such as IDAM, cloud security, containerization, modern build practices and a dev-ops mindset

  • Great skills in hiring, developing and retaining engineers & mentor junior architects and grow them.

  • Experience in collaborating on creating and promoting Pearson’s architectural standards and practices and arbitrates technical disagreements across teams

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication and presentation skills with the ability to influence and align

  • Run, operationalize and track the engineering operations meeting, working with engineering leaders to resolve open issues as well as set agenda.

  • Computer Science degree with (Masters or above preferred) with15 years in software industry.
