Hilton Senior Design Manager, Interior Design (based in Johannesburg or Cape Town) in Sandton, South Africa

Position Summary:

Specifically to assist in the review and development of the Interior Design & FF E process across Development and Capex hotel projects in Sub Sahara Africa, across all brands. To assist the Senior Director of Interior Design with the enhancement of the quality of design, by translating organisational goals and objectives into performance objectives and managing multiple projects across geographical boundaries and between multiple stakeholders.

In conjunction with the above, the role is to assist the Senior Director of Interior Design, with all design responsibilities including technical review of all specifications to meet both Brand and technical standards, participating in value engineering opportunities, working with Project Directors to meet project schedule, and any design issue that impacts the overall success of renovations services.

The role will also include specific requirements to manage and lead and manage design projects, FF E requirements as part of the design process for each project and also coordination with the design and FF E managers to ensure brand compliance. This role will be design lead and ensure that through detailed design direction and review the full technical and concept design packages, FF E and materials the quality of design is elevated across multiple brands and regions.

On minor Capex and some owner funded projects the role will also include making suggestions for FF E, giving detailed design direction and detailed guidance on interior and architectural proposals at each design stage. This role should build on extensive interior design experience in the field and full coordination with design consultants on space planning, materials and design is expected. Previous interior design experience on major hotel projects should also be used as a vehicle to give rationale to detailed guidance and review notes to interior design consultants.

What will I be doing?

Planning Activities – 20%

•Direct and assist the Senior Director of Interior Design with project planning and also area programming where required. Reviews of each project scope and/or PIP for completeness and clarity. Review and approve the design direction, materials specification requirements as well as Hilton Standards. Review and critique each completed project and submit a monthly summary report to the Senior Directors of Interior Design

•Review and comment on sketch layouts and or CAD layouts to design consultants.

•Review and lead on all items of interior design FF&E for all projects including Design specifications, shop drawings, mock-ups etc giving detailed design feedback and design approvals at each design stage.

•Review design and detailed design submittals, plans and construction details to ensure technical Standard requirements are met. Design and value engineering alternatives for products. This process should be design lead and examples used from previous interior design experience.

Directing Activities – 50%

•Direct and communicate design and construction and brand standards to assigned design firms. Reviews Interior Design proposals for accurate and complete scope of work as directed by Senior Director of Interior Design

•Through design leadership, enhance Hilton’s design platform in Europe using the design process with flair and creativity. Provide alternative solutions for design schemes and guiding designers to improve design package. This should be done through visual means such as mood images, CAD layouts, sketch plans and reference imagery.

•Provide design support, continuity and encourage the cross-fertilisation of new ideas, programs and directives between various regions and brands, through scheduled meetings and regular communication. Establish and maintain regular communication with the project team, as needed or directed. Establish and maintain communication with Hilton GDS / FF E teams within Europe.

•Assessing detailed interior design drawings and providing guidance and feedback at each design stage to ensure the increase in design quality. Create and develop new hotel designs in respect of interior design layouts, finishes and associated technical requirements which reflect the desired atmosphere and interior design quality of all Hilton Brands. Ensure functionality of layouts, practicality of design plus compliance with Hilton standards and best Hilton practices in conjunction with the Senior Director of Interior Design.

•Critique interior design guest room layouts and all FOH areas to meet operational requirements and maximise commercial opportunities. Prepare sketch layouts for projects showing zoning/ furniture layouts and configurations together with mood or FF E boards to assist the interior design consultant where appropriate.

•Lead mock up room design and FF E reviews on site and where appropriate provide detailed feedback on interior design, construction and design and construction standards. A detailed understanding of construction materials. Details and architectural rod drawings will also be required.

•Review interior design presentation, FF E and design presentations against the brand narratives and specific Global Design Services initiatives. Provide design feedback based on interior design experience and knowledge of hotel design.

•Give detailed direction on design standard compliance with a flexible approach to working with selected design consultants.

•Give specific design alternatives and examples to design teams and consultants to progress design development.

•Comment on design schemes giving visual references and detailed design direction.

Controlling Activities – 20%

•Overview of each selected project through to its completion. Review and approve all interior design project documents and provide a written review with recommendations. As needed and/or directed, make periodic inspections of the project site during the design process and installation of projects. Monitors the quality of design work and adherence to the approved project scope, specifications and Hilton Standards. Leads and/or attends project meetings, as needed and/or directed by the Senior Director of Interior Design.

•Execute interior design projects, which may not require the services of an outside design firm, in the selection of fabrics, wall covering, carpet replacement, etc. as advised by the Senior Directors of Interior Design & Architecture. Interior design, architectural planning and knowledge of construction may be required here also.

•Prepare written and visual design briefs for landmark hotels across all brands giving details of location, brand expectations and visual reference. Examples of FOH layouts, images, mood boards and an understanding of brand narratives is required.

•Provide written sign off in conjunction with the allocated Hilton project manager for each design stage.

Organising Activities – 10%

•Assist with: - special requests non-owned properties.

-maintain a FF&E Preamble to the Hilton D&C Standards with the Asia, UK and Europe design teams.

-review and development of the Hilton preferred designers list and suitability for specific site location, owners and area of design.

•Build relationships with external design consultants, owners and all relevant Hilton departments to ensure the advancement of the design platform across all Hilton brands.

•Review key elements of FF E, control books, design standards and give detailed design direction to both the design consultant and project team.

•Review and ensure projects keep within budgets.

Create professional monthly and regular presentations using software including InDesign AutoCad, Photoshop and Power Point.


In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the supervisor based upon the particular requirements of the company.

•Stay knowledgeable about the Interior Design industry and be aware of new products and materials, as well as their availability and potential project applications, in order to maintain current and innovative design criteria recommendations.

•Attend seminars and furniture shows when possible.

•Make a committed effort to tour recently completed Hilton and non-Hilton properties, both locally and in other domestic regions, in order to stay in tune with new ideas and the competitive market.

•Visit new hotels and F B in Europe on a monthly basis and research new openings across all regions.

•Attend any relevant trade fairs to stay abreast of new design & FF E trends and specifications and assist in the enhancement of the Hilton suppliers network across all brands.

•Review of construction drawings / rod drawings and detailed architectural plans, providing feedback where appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

•BA / BS / Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design or related field, or qualification in lieu of.

•Significant experience in commercial and / or hospitality design.

•Experience in the field of hospitality, design-managing project planning experience in liaising with outside consultants.

•Ability to work with and gain respect and trust of Owner/Developers architects, interior designers, engineers, contractors and Hilton departments including Senior Executive, Development, Operations, Brand Management, Global Design and Technical Services.

•Flexibility and sensitivity in method of dealing with various people, personalities, cultures.

•Willing and able to take responsibility and work for multiple projects at one time.

•Ability to endure extensive travel, required on supporting projects under development, or hotels undergoing rehabilitation, within Europe.

•Strong design background and proficiency with AutoCAD, along with Word, Excel, Outlook and Photoshop.

•Ability to see, develop and take responsibility of multi discipline design/planning solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Extensive experience in hospitality design, ideally within a major hotel company of a similar size to Hilton.

•Experience in a major design or management role in an interior designers office on hotel and large developments or architectural practice.
