Process Control Engineer

As a member of one of the Area Support Teams, the Process Control Engineer/Technologist is accountable for the integrity, reliability and operability of all process control designs within their assigned area of the plant. The Process Control Engineer/Technologist will advise Technical, Maintenance & Production departments on process control matters to ensure safe, reliable & efficient operation and compliance to provincial & federal codes & standards.
Lead engineering activities for the assigned Production Asse t, covering all aspects of base layer control strategies HMI design, and alarm management.
Identify unit performance improvement opportunities and reliability risks , and work with Area team to determine and implement cost-effective solutions.
Understand the process safety requirements for the production Area and collaborate with SIS specialists in designing or modifying Safety Instrumented Functions.
Author plant changes Management of Change (MOC) within the Process Control discipline and provides Technical Assurance of plant changes by other disciplines and departments
Conduct or lead failure analysis and causal investigation of Base Layer control failures or incidents. Develop solutions to prevent future occurrence.
Provide advice, leadership, auditing and design, of process control activities to all departments.
Network with other sites and company personnel to maintain a high quality of work and proactively prevent problems related to process control.
Collaborate with Systems and Instrumentation specialists in developing and implementing obsolescence strategies for equipment in the assigned production areas.
Collaborate with Instrument and Maintenance specialists in developing and owning the Turnaround worklist for assigned production areas. Provide active support for the implementation of process control scope during turnarounds.
Dimensions (Environment, Budget, Span of Control, Special Challenges, etc.):
The successful candidate will be assigned a plant area to support as part of a multi-discipline area team and will represent the PACO discipline on this team. The ability to deal with multiple issues and to work collaboratively with a high sense of ownership is required.
A broad skillset is required for this position. Flexibility and willingness to learn new skills is required since there will be an expectation to expand competency into instrumentation and SIS disciplines.
Shift coverage may be required for special events such as unit upsets, start ups and shut downs
Off Hours call out support when required.

Skills & Requirements:
Professional qualifications: Electrical or Chemical Engineering degree, or Instrumentation Engineering Technologist.
Eligible for Professional status from APEGGA as a P.Eng. or P.L.(Eng).
4+ years relevant industrial experience in the areas of design and engineering in the process control and instrumentation discipline; preferably in a refinery/upgrader or large industrial facility.
Solid skills in developing base layer control applications on FoxI/A DCS, or Honeywell Experion systems.
Working understanding of instrumentation technology selection and design for industrial/petro-chemical applications.
Good knowledge of safe work practices and engineering obligations in an industrial environment including change management (MOC) work processes and procedures.
Familiarity with maintenance practices, project scope development, turn-around and long term planning is an asset
Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve instrumentation and control problems with maintenance and operations.
Utilization of problem solving techniques to resolve design & engineering issues.
Ability to work effectively within a multi-discipline team environment consisting of Engineering, Projects, Maintenance, and Operations, collaboratively troubleshooting and solving plant issues.
Organized, thorough, and professional.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with peers and clients.
Ability to articulate and defend a case for change or improvement.
