American Water Operator - Maintenance Mechanic I in Short Hills, New Jersey

Primary Role

The Operator-Maintenance Mechanic I may be assigned to perform any responsibility that lies within the capability of the employee based on experience, knowledge, qualifications, and training.

_ *There are two positions available. Hours will be alternate shift (Tuesday - Saturday, Sunday - Thursday 1st shift or Monday - Friday 2nd shift). *_

Key Accountabilities

  • Operates water treatment facilities and related appurtenances including, but not limited to, chemical feeders, pumps, purification units, and standby generation and residual processing equipment to ensure the safe, reliable production and delivery of the highest quality water.

  • Performs and/or assists with repairs to and maintenance of equipment and facilities such as chemical pump cleaning, piping repairs and modifications, cleaning and painting equipment and structures, machinery lubrication, pump adjustment, equipment analysis and data collection, vibration, temperature, electrical readings, and analytical water testing equipment.

  • Reviews, monitors, and adjusts hydraulic and chemical processes to achieve and maintain established water quality standards and system requirements. Operates and adjusts computer control systems to ensure the integrity of remote water treatment facilities, transmission and distribution systems and removes hydraulic and chemical systems.

  • Prioritizes and coordinates tasks and/or activities required for the efficient and reliable operation of water treatment facilities and related appurtenances. Receives chemicals and materials in accord with established company, State, and/or Federal safety standards and/or practices. Maintains the appearance of remote water treatment facilities and grounds in accord with company standards. Prepares and maintains accurate facility and system records and reports.

  • Collects water samples, as directed and in accord with established water quality procedures. Performs water treatment tests and evaluates water samples, as directed, to ensure process water quality is within established parameters and, if necessary, adjusts treatment process to ensure the integrity of the water supply.

  • Responds to inquiries accurately and professionally and, when necessary, involves the appropriate individual(s) to resolve customer and companyrelated issues and to achieve the highest level of customer service in all areas of assigned responsibilities.Performs job tasks, activities, and responsibilities of the Filer Operator and Station Operator when, in the company's sole and exclusive judgment, sufficient progression has been demonstrated in the core skills required for such jobs. Assists in all phases of production facilities' operations, as required.

Knowledge / Skills

  • Working knowledge of all aspects of water treatment operations including hydraulic, chemical, and electrical equipment and processes in addition to a thorough understanding of the distribution system network including, but not limited to, gradients, capacities, interconnections, mapping, service territory and facility locations, to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the water treatment facility and related appurtenances.

  • The Operator-Maintenance Mechanic I must be capable of operating equipment and vehicles necessary for the completion of assignments and must possess and maintain a valid Drivers’ License.

  • The individual will also be required to pass an initial and annual TCPA and OSHA medical examination and must be able to perform the essential functions and meet the physical requirements for Operator-Maintenance Mechanic.

  • Working knowledge of company policies, procedures, and safety practices as well as state and federal rules and regulations applicable to area of responsibility including, but not limited to, TCPA and OSHA and will be required to become an EHS Operator and a certified Emergency Responder Technician.

Required to pass an entrance examination and qualification examinations developed by the company at established intervals.

HS Diploma/GED required

Licenses & Certifications

The Operator-Maintenance Mechanic I will also be required to attain and maintain a T-1 and W-1 License in accord with the educational and operational criteria established by the State of New Jersey.
