We are seeking a Researcher III to support the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Office of Clinical Pharmacology. The Researcher III will support the Division of Applied Regulatory Science (DARS) in a project developing a model that has both a human immune system and liver that could be used to assess pre-clinical toxicity of small and large molecule drugs.

This individual will be directly involved in the production, testing, analysis, and evaluation of this model for assaying human-specific effects of drugs and drug-immune system-hepatic interactions in physiological settings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position)

  • Responsible for design, execution, and interpretation of drug testing using in vitro, in vivo , and ex vivo methods and techniques.

  • Isolation and culture of cells from human tissues and mice.

  • Surgery to humanize severely immune-compromised mice.

  • Multi-parameter flow cytometry.

  • Usage of process specific assays.

  • Literature review and manuscript preparation.


Travel may be required to attend testing facilities, conventions, and meetings at various locations in the continental U.S. (CONUS).

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)

  • PhD in Immunology, Toxicology or another relevant science field.

  • Minimum three (3) years of laboratory experience in academia or industry.

  • Strong background in mechanisms of hepatic injury and experience with liver function, required.

  • Experience with standard immunologic techniques including aseptic tissue processing, cell culture, ELISA, and cell-based assays, required.

  • Previous mouse handling experience required.

  • Previous experience with immune compromised mouse strains, preferred.

  • Animal surgical skills strongly desired.

  • Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to independently plan, develop, implement, and manage all experiments and protocols under study.

  • Work independently on basic and advanced laboratory procedures.

  • Keep abreast of pertinent literature and incorporate appropriate concepts and techniques into research activities and experiments.

  • Collect, record, organize, and analyze experimental data.

  • Summarize progress for presentation at laboratory and division meetings and at research conferences, when necessary.
