Fossil Workforce Development Student Intern - Power Plant Technology

Five (5) positions are available at our W.H. Sammis Power Plant located in Stratton, OH.


Our summer internship program is designed to cultivate your technical and professional skills. This experience will help you qualify for an entry-level position by providing you the opportunity to job shadow current employees in the operation of boilers, team turbine generators, air quality control equipment, National Pollution Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) and associated auxiliary equipment.

As an intern, you will receive a personalized development plan, ongoing feedback and the opportunity to test your knowledge. Your skills will be developed by observing, asking questions and gaining knowledge in the duties of Power Plant Operators or others. Job responsibilities may include:

  • Participating in pre-job and post-job briefings, completing assigned jobs, system walk downs and other assignments.

  • Observing the start and stop of boilers, main turbines, generators and their auxiliaries and associated equipment as required by system conditions.

  • Working independently or with others to ensure efficient, dependable operating conditions of boilers, turbines, generators or other equipment.

  • Using verbal and written communication skills that are timely, clear, concise and accurate. Three-part communication is used along with the phonetic alphabet and the proper names of systems and equipment.

  • Understanding of the importance of removing and tagging of equipment from service for inspection and maintenance work, including importance of tag-out for everyone's safety. Qualifications:

  • A student who has completed, or is enrolled in, an authorized Power Plant Technology Program and has a GPA of 2.5.

  • Demonstrate a questioning attitude to learn, produce results and develop relationships.

  • Demonstrate a solid commitment to all aspects of safety. This includes wearing all personal protective equipment (PPE) and conducting yourself in a safe and proper manner at all times.

  • Successfully pass the company’s pre-hire testing, including physical, drug, and background check.

  • Possess a valid driver's license.

EEI Testing

We administer selection tests for a variety of positions. The required tests have been developed by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), a trade association of investor-owned electric utility companies. We strongly encourage potential employees to review all information, including the sample test brochures, and to use the available practice tests before taking the actual tests.
