Location/Division Specific Information:

This role will be based in Tewksbury, MA.

Field and Safety Instruments (FSI) is a new business within Thermo Fisher that was established in 2017 by the merger of two legacy businesses. FSI is the leader in handheld spectrometers for a wide range of applications across industrial, pharma, safety/security, nuclear power, and healthcare markets.

How will you make an impact?

We are seeking a Systems Engineer, specializing in handheld analytical device development and launch, to join a thriving research and development team responsible for the development of our award-winning series of handheld analyzers used for material identification in a wide array of markets. The candidate will lead and work closely with scientists and engineers within R&D and wider business teams to bring new products to market.

What will you do?

  • Lead and manage development programs of next generation products

  • Work with business teams on proof of feasibility, drive teams to complete development tasks and launch products on time and within budget

  • Global travel estimated to be >10%

How will you get there?


  • BS/MS/PhD in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science etc.


  • BS (10+) MS (6+) PhD (3+) years’ experience in system engineering; comprising mechanical, electronical, embedded software, firmware

  • Expert knowledge of System Engineering principles and practices

  • Experienced in leading a team on system integration, specifically portable or medical devices

  • 3+ years’ experience leading a team of scientists/engineers

  • Experience working in a matrix organization

Desired Experience:

  • Hands on experience developing and releasing handheld/portable devices in at least two of the following disciplines: Raman, FTIR, NIR, XRF, OES, LIBS

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Must be U.​S.​ Citizen or US Permanent Resident
