Summary:

The SPO is and armed officer, who has successfully completed the required NASA training, with NASA Federal arrest authority and Federal Magistrate Training, whose primary duties may include but are not limited to: first response to emergencies; enforcing federal law and assimilated state law; conducting mobile patrols, inspections and searches; conducting traffic enforcement and traffic investigations; initiating an arrest and transporting persons; perform protective service work such as guarding NASA owned or leased buildings and property; protecting NASA equipment and material; controlling access to NASA installations by employees, visitors, and residents; and other duties as assigned. The SPO is armed with a side arm, shotgun, or other weapons as required.

  • Required to follow all company personnel and safety policies, and perform all assigned duties in a safe work manner.

  • Will arrive at work in proper uniform and carrying needed, issued equipment.

  • Will be required to exercise force up to and including deadly force, when required

  • Will participate in Guard Mount, receive assigned post, and copy any extra instructions.

  • Will carry out general and special orders for post assigned.

  • Will communicate via radio, telephone and orally according to orders.

  • Required to interact and escort as required with public and government personnel.

  • Will provide access control, traffic control and conduct walking and motorized armed security functions.

  • Will be responsible for cleanliness of uniform and equipment assigned.

  • Will follow applicable standard operating procedures and NASA regulations pertaining to security of weapons, buildings, personnel, NASA property and equipment.

  • Will conduct personnel, vehicular, building, & facility checks and package & parcel inspections.

  • Must be able to work flexible hours to include weekends and holidays if needed.

  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Minimum of three years’ experience as a full time employee of a civilian law enforcement agency, military police, or government or civilian security guard organization or minimum of three years military experience in specified military occupational specialties in which the military tour of duty included duties involving security, force protection, weapons proficiency, protecting property, maintaining law and order, protecting lives or other duties similar in nature (i.e., Military Police, Infantry, Special Forces, Security Forces, Communications, War Veteran, etc).

  • Honorably discharged (If Applicable)

  • Possess a Diploma or certificate as a graduate of a Federal, State, or local law enforcement agency; or military services recognized basic law enforcement or physical security training academy.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida state driver’s license.

  • Must be able to obtain a DoD security clearance, but not required to start.

  • Must be able to meet drug testing and alcohol – free workforce requirements to include random drug and/or alcohol testing.

  • Must successfully pass the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2 (MMPI)/Shipley Abstract/Vocabulary

  • Must speak, read, write, and understand the English language, apply written rules, detailed orders, instructions and training material.

  • Have no record or history of illegal drug use, sale, possession, or manufacture.

  • Have no felony convictions and no convictions that reflect on the individual’s reliability including those crimes classified under the Lautenburg Act.

  • Must be able to qualify on a course of fire with handgun, or other special weapons and maintain qualifications semi-annually thereafter.

  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment Basic Physical Agility Test (BPAT) within 6 minutes which consists of the following:

  • From a seated position exit vehicle, open truck and grab baton-flashlight

  • Complete 220-yard run

  • Navigate an obstacle course (40 inch wall, three hurdles (24 inch, 12 inch, 18 inch-high) serpentine pylon maneuver, low crawl)- total length 115 feet

  • Complete 50-foot sprint

  • Drag 150 lb dummy 50 feet (under arm carry or by 10-inch rope attached to collar area)

  • Repeat obstacle course

  • Repeat 220-yard run

  • Return baton-flashlight to trunk and enter vehicle

  • Must complete a one (1) mile run in 10 minutes or less

  • Must be able to meet and maintain NASA Physical Certifications

  • In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.

  • Skill in operating a personal computer and standard office equipment.

  • Must have proficiency in a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database, (MSWord, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), and Outlook.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

  • Must successfully complete the Basic Physical Agility Test (BPAT) annually each Fall and the Kennedy Physical Agility Test (KPAT) with body armor and duty gear annually, each Spring. The KPAT consists of the following:

  • From a seated position exit vehicle, open trunk and grab baton-flashlight

  • Complete 220-yard run

  • Navigate an obstacle course (40 inch wall, three hurdles (24 inch, 12 inch 18 inch) serpentine pylon maneuver, low crawl

  • Complete 50 foot sprint

  • Drag 150 lb dummy 50 feet (under arm carry or by 10-inch rope attached to collar area)

  • Engage NASA standard target that is 10 away with weapon and fire two (2) rounds

  • A 30 second time penalty will be added for each round that does not hit the target

Work Environment:

  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.

  • During visits to areas of operations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
