BMO Financial Group Regional Director, Banking - Private Banking in Vancouver, British Columbia


The Regional Director, Banking provides banking & credit expertise and technical leadership for strategy, business, products, and policies toBanking professionals within the region. The Regional Director, Banking partners with National Office to support its mandate within the region, anddrives a strategic vision for the LOB over a 1 – 2 year time period that identifies business development opportunities.The Regional Director,Banking communicates strategic, operational and product/process issues to National Office for resolution and plays an integral role in changemanagement within the region. The Regional Director, Banking collaborates with Market Managers and Market Leaders for development of

regional strategy and business plan, succession planning, and resolution of performance management issues specific to banking & creditmanagement. The Regional Director, Banking is also accountable for oversight of complex Banking deals, and providing specialized coachingand mentoring of the Banking professionals, with particular attention to training and development opportunities.

The Regional Director, Banking will also manage, directly or in-directly depending on the size of the market, Private Bankers and Private BankingOfficers in the hub market. The Regional Director, Banking will also manage the Professional Services Group for the Banking LOB.A strong cross-functional relationship exists with the LOB Head as the Regional Director, Banking must adhere to any policies, procedures ordirectives established by the LOB to ensure the appropriate credit and risk management is in place within the region.

A. Managerial Leadership

  • Set appropriate context and direction for the vision within the market, ensuring alignment with the vision for BPB in the region, partnering

with the Market Leader are required

  • Establish a two-way working relationship with direct reports to solicit their views on market opportunities, the working environment,potential changes affecting their work, continuous improvement opportunities, and revisions to the plan

  • Build and sustain a team of direct reports who are capable of delivering the performance required for BMO Private Banking, includingcoaching and the creation and implementation of training and development plans

  • Establish and optimize team integration by articulating the linkages between the accountabilities and authorities of different roles acrossthe group and by establishing the context in which they will work collaboratively with one another

  • Ensure all integrating mechanisms are in place for all sales professionals in order to facilitate team behaviours and the focus on theintegrated offer (e.g., appropriate training across product lines)

  • Apply the Bank’s performance management system to direct reports, including establishing goals and objectives, assessing skilledknowledge gaps, allocating resources to achieve objectives and close gaps, assessing personal effectiveness, and reviewing andrecommending base and variable pay

  • Ensure the effective implementation of Bank initiatives and programs through the establishment of appropriate context and setting ofdirection for direct reports by providing relevant information, establishing goals, and setting limits with the context and prescribed limits ofthe Vice-President and Regional Market Leader

  • Develop and sustain an effective multi-level unit, as a manager of managers, ensuring the quality of effective managerial leadershippractices of managers; conducting talent pool assessment with managers on the capability of their staff; and holding mentoring discussionswith and hearing requests from employees

B. Strategy & Business Development

  • Collaborate with National Office, acting as a member of the Banking LOB leadership team, to set direction, standards and governance forregional Banking professionals around Banking initiatives, changes, and products

  • Support the Market Leader in the development and implementation of the regional strategic business plan, including clearly definedrevenue growth and profitability objectives for the Banking LOB

  • Develop the Banking LOB strategy and operating guidelines for the region, over a 1 – 2 year time period, to effectively and efficientlyuphold and fulfill the Banking mandate

  • Monitor the overall business results of the Banking LOB within the region and provide analysis of key factors impacting currentperformance and potential issues for the future

  • Continuously and proactively enhance BMO Private Banking presence in the marketplace by creating innovative business developmentstrategies for the Banking LOB, as well as collaborate with other regional experts on integrated business development strategies

  • Participate on the regional executive leadership committee representing the needs of the Banking LOB to ensure focus on the overallBanking mandate within BPB while still maintaining an overall integrated view of the business

  • Ensure integrity of integrated offer is maintained and a customer centered culture is supported and enhanced through the delivery ofBanking products

  • Reinforce BPB sales process and client experience, identifying gaps, issues and best practices through the monitoring of sales andperformance targets against plans in order to create and sustain a sales environment that ensures consistent superior service to BPBclients and prospects

  • Develop internal and external networks and referrals sources to ensure the ongoing growth of the BPB business within the region

C. Technical Leadership & Development

  • Communicate with National Office and disseminate Banking strategy, product, policy, and other related information to all Managers,Banking and Manager, Professional Services Group within the regions

  • Execute defined implementation strategies for any Banking product or process changes, following established change managementprinciples and ensuring communications to all banking employees within the region

  • Partner with the Manager, Banking and/or the Market Manager to identify and resolve any training or knowledge gaps for bankingprofessionals in the region to ensure a consistently superior level of banking expertise

  • Support the training and development plan, developed by the Manager, Banking and/or Market Manager, for new Private Bankers toensure they have the required knowledge and exposure for the Banking LOB

  • Provide input to Market Manager on succession planning to ensure the Banking functions are effectively staffed at all times with properlyqualified individuals

  • Investigate and resolve or make recommendations to more complex, non-routine issues relating to client inquiries or requests, or issuesescalated by Manager, Banking and Manager, Professional Services Group, as well as provide specialized expertise, technical advice andcounsel on complex Banking deals

  • Provide recommendations to the Market Manager on the goals and objectives for the Manager, Banking and Private Bankers based on the

LOB strategy and direction from National Office, as well as providing input on performance evaluations of banking professionals as itrelates to banking expertise and knowledge

  • Identify and recruit sales professionals collaborating with Market Manager and Manager, Banking as needed to meet the overall needs of

the Banking LOB

D. Change & Innovation

  • Support the identification and sharing of enterprise and industry best practices, to maximize productivity and encourage continuousimprovement, collaborating with National Office and other Regional Director, Banking as required

  • Support the improvement of banking products and workflows by identifying and recommending process improvement initiatives toNational Office

  • Identify requirements to meet changing internal and external conditions and drive business innovation and new customer centeredsolutions in partnership and with the support of National Office

E. Risk Management & Compliance

  • Mitigate risks identified and make credit recommendations/decisions that are in accordance with sound credit-granting principles and incompliance with the Bank’s philosophy and principles as outlined in Corporate Risk Policy as well as appropriate supporting Policies &Procedures

  • Exercise judgment and ensure adherence to Corporate Risk Policy for credit applications, ensuring that risks identified are mitigated andcredit recommendations/ decisions are made in accordance with sound credit- granting principles and in compliance with the Bank’sphilosophy and principles as well as appropriate supporting Policies and Procedures

  • Acts as a technical resource in credit and lending for Private Bankers, and as a consulting resource in these areas for other BMO PrivateBanking employees

  • Authorize credit qualification and/or discretionary limit requests of Private Bankers which are escalated by Manager, Banking, as well asestablish or review credit qualification status and/or discretionary limits when necessary

  • Provide guidance and advice on compliance policies and procedures related to Banking and credit issues, and ensure risk managementprocedures and controls are being adhered to

  • Ensure the quality of the overall banking portfolio in the region to support effective portfolio quality management

  • Ensure the effective monitoring of operational controls is in place to identify any deficiencies and support the initiation of appropriatecorrective actions to ensure controls are adequate

  • Ensure adherence to all aspects of First Principles our code of Business Conduct and Ethics including individual accountability as it relatesto potential conflicts of interest, safeguarding of customer information, trading in securities, anti-money laundering, privacy and disclosureof outside business activities

  • Follow security and safeguarding procedures and apply appropriate due diligence in accordance with Bank policy for the prevention of lossdue to fraud, robbery, counterfeiting, money laundering or defalcation

  • Protect the Bank’s assets by adhering to all everyday banking, business banking, investment and lending regulations (as appropriate),Policies and Procedures, legal and ethical requirements, process requirements, bank guidelines and lending process requirements andestablished risk guidelines



  • MBA, CFA or other post graduate degree or equivalent experience

  • 10 years experience in the financial services industry

  • Expert knowledge of the Banking, Trust and Investment disciplines

  • Proven track record in developing and growing a profitable financial or related client service business

  • Recognized as an expert in Banking in the Private Bank and in the industry

  • Extensive knowledge and technical proficiency related to banking strategies, issues and trends

  • Significant technical expertise in the areas of financial planning, banking products and services

  • Broad perspective of economics and financial markets

  • Broad and diverse background of the financial service industry and expert knowledge of the banking, and personal and commercialcredit disciplines for the high net worth markets


  • Highly developed and proven project management, coaching and communication skills

  • Seek and seize opportunities, take risks willingly after prudent analysis

  • Strong work ethic, work well under pressure

  • Flexible and empathetic, able to work effectively in a variety of situations

  • Ability to resolve a magnitude of diverse, complex and ambiguous issues/situations in a creative manner
