Primary Role

American Water has an exciting opportunity for an intern within their External Affairs department! If you are outgoing, comfortable with public speaking, and interested in our community this might be the perfect fit for you!

This is a paid internship that will run from mid-April through October and does include some weekends, and will average 20 hours per week.

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for carrying out a regionalized program in which the person will participate in educational and community events within our customer service areas.

  • Under the direction of the Manager of External Affairs:

o Represent American Water at community events and outreach programs.

o Implementing event planning plans based on community feedback and business needs.

o Present before small and large groups within the community (schools, community organizations etc.).

o Provide photography and content related to events for customer facing outlets (internet, social media, newsletters, etc.).

o Coordinate activities for events to include working with vendors, community partners, and employees.

o Identify volunteerism needs and coordinate scheduling volunteers to work various community events.

Knowledge / Skills

  • Strong demonstrated communications skills (writing, editing, verbal communication, public presentations).

  • Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, social media, internet).

  • Project planning.

Experience / Education

  • High school degree or equivalent; must be enrolled in an accredited university/college program to receive credit. Pursuit of postsecondary education in the fields of communications or environmental sciences preferred.

  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience in public speaking, community outreach activities and/or presentations

  • Self-directed and able to work without supervision

  • Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas

Position Requirements

  • Position involves physical activity to include setting up tents for tabling and/or water stations; loading and unloading van for event set up. Standing for long periods of time. Ability to drive during daylight and nighttime hours.

  • A Valid Driver’s License is required

  • Seasonal position (April – October) to include weekend and evening hours

  • 80% field work, to include driving personal vehicle, driving company vehicle, and working outdoors

  • 20% Indoor office environment

  • Average 20 hours (2-3 days) per week
