Job Summary

TheLocksmithinstalls, repairs, rebuilds, and services mechanical or electrical locking devices using hand tools and special equipment.

Principal Accountabilities

(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)

  • Installs lock cores and re-cores and re-pins locks.

  • Manufactures keys.

  • Changes combinations, including those on safes, GSA containers, electronic locks and entry controls.

  • Maintains and repairs Card Key Locks, which includes annual replacement of batteries in each lock.

  • Provides emergency access services for lock devices for which the combination or key is not available.

  • Disassembles locks such as padlocks, safe locks and door locks.

  • Repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts of malfunctioning locks.

  • Maintains key and combination records.

  • Installs and repairs locks on safe, vaults, furniture, desks, cabinets, mobile equipment and other items.

  • Fits and installs doors and related hardware.

  • Installs or repairs hydraulic door closers and electronic door operators using hand and power tools.

  • Installs, repairs, programs and maintains electronic access control systems, components and hardware.

  • Performs other duties as assigned and if qualified.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of the standard methods, procedures, and various types of locks and tools used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of locks, doors and hardware.

  • Knowledge of electronic access standard methods and procedures used in the installation and programming of electronic access systems.

  • Knowledge of card access control panels, card readers, infra-red readers and other electronic access equipment.

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of locksmithing.

  • Skill in carpentry and the use of various hand and power tools.

  • Skill in the installation of locks, doors, and hardware.

Experience & Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of locks, including one (1) year in position equivalent to Locksmith.

  • GSA Safe and Vault Technician certification required

  • Top Secret security clearance and state-issued locksmith license may be required, depending on work site.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • May work indoors or outdoors, in shop or office environment.
