How will you make an impact?

As a member of the DNA Development team, the Scientist III R&D is responsible for understanding, performing daily testing of reagents, and data analysis for research, development, improvement, and troubleshooting HLA gene typing products or related projects. This position functions primarily as a project leader, receives direction from supervisor, staff scientist, and/or manager and interacts with laboratory staff members in coordinating daily activities.

What will you do?

  • Manage and maintain required reagents (reference samples, assay buffers, and labeling reagents, etc.), laboratory environment and equipment needed to carry out assigned projects

  • Assist in maintenance and updating of all required SOP’s and quality records of equipment maintenance, tests, analyses and other relevant data

  • Manage and prioritize assignments approved by Supervisor or Research Manager to ensure completion of the assignments

  • Understand and implement relevant company and department policies and procedures

  • Accountable for maintenance of a safe work environment including proper staff training in laboratory safety procedures, maintenance and stocking of proper safety equipment and supplies

  • Design experiments and perform testing of reagents for development, improvement, and troubleshooting HLA gene typing products or related issues

  • Attendance and participation in scheduled planning meetings and/or status meetings

  • As a member of a designated project team, actively participate in intra-department meetings and assist other project teams to resolve technical/operational issues and/or provide support

  • Collaborate closely with other teams in DNA department to complete highest priority work as directed

  • Function as a technical lead for time-sensitive projects

  • Provide technical and analytical expertise in development of DNA-based molecular typing reagents for HLA and related genes for clinical use

How will you get here?

Education / Experience

  • Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Genetics or a related discipline in Biological Sciences AND 2 years of postdoctoral experience, preferably in the development of therapeutics or diagnostics; OR a master degree AND 5 years of experience in biotech or biopharmaceutical industry; OR Bachelor’s degree AND 7 years of experience in biotech or biopharmaceutical industry.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Clear understanding and experience of molecular biology techniques

  • Clear understanding and experience in running polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and demonstrated ability to design primers for target of interest

  • Clear understanding and experience in Real-time Quantitative PCR, and demonstrated ability to design primers and probes for identification of specific genes or polymorphisms

  • Experience using commercially available Real-time PCR machines

  • Perform laboratory bench work

  • Communicate effectively with minimal supervision

  • Work as a cooperative member of a research team

  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, at times as a lead for a project

  • Daily transition from laboratory to data analysis

  • Plan and organize oneself in a reliable and consistent manner

  • Prepare and present reports to management involving data critical to new product development and current process/product improvement

  • Perform computer data entry in a conscientious manner

  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive laboratory and business data. He/she is expected to maintain work schedules as assigned. This position will, on a timely basis, notify immediate supervisor and/or manager of status and completion of assigned work projects/tasks. In addition, he/she will ensure that safe laboratory procedures and protocols are followed at all times especially in the application of universal precautions in handling of all blood and blood byproducts. All laboratory personnel are expected to notify their immediate supervisors of any unsafe conditions and/or practices and to take appropriate corrective actions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to design sequencing primers for confirmatory testing

  • Experience in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and data analysis

  • Familiar with 1000 genome and related gene databases

  • Experience in the field of Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) is a plus
