Merck Scientist, Assay Development in West Point, Pennsylvania

Job Description

The Immunotoxicology group in the Safety Assessment and Laboratory Animal Resources (SALAR) department is seeking a research scientist. This individual will be part of high performing group responsible for the design and conduct of in vitro and ex vivo investigative studies to support preclinical and clinical drug candidate selection and development. In this role, the scientist will apply advanced cell culture models and molecular biology approaches, develop and qualify new immunological assays (including flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) -based assays), and conduct protein biomarker assessments to identify potential safety risks in close collaboration with discovery scientists, toxicologists, and pathologists. To that end, the individual will be expected to have advanced knowledge of general, cellular, and molecular toxicology principles, experience conducting mechanistic investigative studies, hypothesis-driven and independent research skills, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written. Furthermore, demonstrated ability and/or aptitude in database management, visualization tools, and/or leveraging programming tools for data processing will be valuable to further laboratory objectives and innovations as well as leverage existing collaborations with our digital analytics team.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science (Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related sciences) plus 2 years of post-graduate experience; OR, an MS degree plus 1 year of work experience.

Must-haves:

Background or familiarity with in vitro toxicology models, assay design, validation, rationale, and mechanistic principles. Experience with development and qualification of new immunological assays including; but not limited to, the following: Blood sample processing, Flow Cytometry based assays, cytokines, and other soluble biomarker assays, and ELISA will be advantageous.
