We are looking for an experienced and self-motivated individual to fill the position of Research Engineer within our Technology organization. The work location is at our Technology Center in Wichita, Kansas.
Essential Job Duties:
This position is responsible for leading R&D activities to support OxyChem’s Business objectives.
Maintain as our highest priority, the protection of the environment, the health and safety of our employees, customers, and the communities in which we operate and/or transport our products.
Understand and work in accordance with all site safety and environmental procedures Adhere to the use of personal protective equipment as required.
Perform assigned engineering tasks using standard procedures. Design chemical plant processes utilizing both classical unit operations and new technologies. Supervises start-up operation of plant and pilot plant processes. Develops specifications for chemical processing equipment. Determine full scale equipment specifications from pilot scale testing.
Design and manage experimental studies at pilot scale to design new chemical processes and/or make recommendations for improvement to existing plant processes.
Generate fixed capital and operating costs for chemical processes and complete economic evaluations as assigned on potential new products, plant modifications and expansions.
Perform mass and energy balance calculations to evaluate process schemes, develop equipment specifications, and complete economic studies.
Prepare chemical process information including, process descriptions, process flow diagrams (PFD’s), piping and instrumentation drawings (P&ID’s) and equipment specifications.
Prepare technical process information for plant personnel to commission and operate chemical manufacturing or environmental facilities.
Monitor laboratory research results on assigned projects and performs engineering evaluations based on preliminary process schemes and economics to develop recommendations.
Identify, recommend, and manage research activities to develop new products, improve existing products, reduce manufacturing costs, improve safety, improve quality, or reduce environmental impact of OxyChem products.
Produce clear, concise, accurate, and timely written and oral reports in which conclusions and recommendations are effectively supported by analytical and/or research data and supporting literature.
Lead the Technical Center’s Process Safety Management (PSM) program including execution of Process Hazard Analyses (PHA’s), compliance with Management of Change (MOC) requirements, pre-start up safety reviews (PSSR’s) and fully investigate incidents.
BS, MS, or PhD In Chemical Engineering or related field, from an accredited institution. Minimum of 3 years of experience in chemical manufacturing or other related process engineering position.
Working knowledge of chemical engineering principles and practices. Ability to prepare process flow diagrams and piping & equipment drawings.
Ability to plan, design, and lead pilot scale projects, analyze data and draw conclusions from the results.
Good problem solving and organizational skills.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Comfortable presenting information to all levels of management, and customers.
Self-motivated with the ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.
Good interpersonal skills. Must be able to work in teams.
Must be able to handle multiple complex issues at the same time.
Proficient in MS Office and process simulator applications, such as Aspen.
May require domestic travel as required to support assignments.
Physical requirements – Must be able to lift 40 pounds, climb ladders, and stairs. Walking, bending, stooping is required. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment as required. Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms.
Additional Desired Qualifications
Candidates with experience in Chlor-alkali production, Chlorination chemistry, Photochemistry, or Organic Chemistry will be given preferential consideration.
EIT certification or PE license a plus.
Possess an advanced understanding of chemical engineering and technical expertise to the planning and execution of significant, complex, or innovative technologies related to the synthesis, manufacture, and applications of organic and inorganic chemicals.
Experience in an industrial R&D or Technology organization.
Experience in intellectual property protection such as patent, copyright, and trademark.
Experience in Process Safety Management administration.
