Job Summary

Plan, organize, direct, coordinate and implement the overall functions of the Fire Department in compliance with established departmental policies and government regulations and directives. Interpret and make decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, directives and policies.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Ensure responses to alarms and conduct of operations are accomplished with maximum safety and professionalism.
  • Ensure efficient and effective utilization of fire department resources and that facilities are maintained in acceptable operational condition.
  • Inspect stations, equipment, alarms, apparatus, and personnel for compliance to established standards of the department.
  • Oversee required training programs and review for effectiveness.
  • Observe and review firefighting methods and make recommendations to enhance efficiencies of the department.
  • Develop and recommend goals, procedures, and work standards.
  • Promote policies and procedures related to the work to develop effective work teams.
  • Serve as a member of accident investigation committees and interview boards for review and safety recommendation purposes.
  • Maintain close coordination with Company, department, and customer personnel.
  • Prepare administrative and financial reports.

Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.


Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Public Administration or related Field such as Fire Science. Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Fire Department Management or an equivalent supervisory position with a federal, state or local ARFF/Structural Rescue Fire Department. Must possess the following current and valid certifications and licenses: Fire Officer III according to standards of NFPA 1020, current edition. Certified Instructor II according to the standards of NFPA 1041, current edition. Fire Inspector II, per NFPA 1031, current edition. Must have a valid, state issued driver’s license. Must have excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills. This position requires the ability to pass and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

This position will be exposed to products of fire to include heat, smoke, toxic fumes, and gases. Exposure will also include extreme environmental elements such as heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and sun, etc. At times, work will be done in an office environment. Basic physical requirements include walking, bending, stooping, stretching, climbing, running, crawling, dragging, carrying, and lifting. Must be able to perform job tasks at any place on the aerial ladder from minimal extension to full extension. Must be able to perform assigned duties while wearing a self-contained-breathing-apparatus (SCBA) with minimal loss of effectiveness and efficiency. Must be able to navigate tight turns, stairs, and enclosed spaces while wearing firefighting personal protective equipment to include SCBA.
