We are looking for an exceptional Instructional Designer to join our DEI&J Content Standards team. The Instructional Designer role plays an integral part of the Pearson Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Justice Content Standards team. The DEI&J Content Standards team supports our products, services, and colleagues to ensure that we collectively achieve our commitment to create and deliver content that reflects the rich diversity of our learners and customers. The team develops and deploys independent content reviews, internal and external training, best practices, data tracking tools, and consulting services.

In this position, the instructional designer will bring proven experience and skills to apply pedagogically sound, efficacious, accessible, and learner-centric design analysis, research, and principles to key DEI&J initiatives in support of our strategic plan. Reporting to the DEI&J Content Standards team Manager, and as part of a highly collaborative team, the instructional designer is responsible for the end-to-end development of our online and in-person training courses, resource library, and internal team website and is involved from conceptualization, storyboards, interactives, assessments, design, launch, and updates.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions

Instructional Design Best Practices

  • Conducts needs assessments, identifies training goals and develops efficacious and learner-centric course materials and learning experiences
  • Designs and develops program instructor-led and online course materials that include scenario-based, hands-on, and applicable real-world/workplace skills.
  • Applies deep instructional design and Adult Learning theory knowledge into projects and initiatives
  • Develops design strategies using team design standards when developing course materials: presentations, infographics, hands-on activities, simulations, facilitator guides, online courses, job aids
  • Facilitates training programs and instructional design workshops as needed
  • Collaborate with team to determine training goals to minimize bias in content

Software/Tools Skills

  • Uses eLearning software applications and templates to update and develop online courses
  • Identifies appropriate training media, training formats, and blended courses to accommodate different learning styles and training audiences (onsite and virtual)
  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and connection with, innovative instructional design thought leaders and communities to share and apply advances in the field of education
  • Serves as team lead on advances in instructional design software and tools to implement scalable services across Pearson

Analysis/Evaluation Knowledge

  • Gain insight into patterns of bias in content
  • Creates program and course evaluations, and tests based on sound course objectives-efficacy standards
  • Evaluates overall program effectiveness and modifies program materials as needed
  • Implements courses and curriculum enhancements based on auditing and business unit feedback
  • Monitors course delivery and program effectiveness to ensure learning outcomes are achieved

Communication/Collaboration

  • Understand the business and human case for DE&I by exploring the latest data, and learning the fundamental vocabulary used in DEI work
  • Collaborates with local and global business partners to gain knowledge about products and services, DEI&J content course, and training needs
  • Monitors, investigates, and implements solutions in support of DEI&J content instructional design needs
  • Demonstrates professionalism, tact, kindness, collaboration, and agility when working with colleagues and vendors
  • Comfortable writing, speaking, and presenting ideas, proposals, and work products to small and large audiences, both formal and informal

Required Professional Experiences: Classroom and/or On-the-job

Bachelor’s Degree desired in a related field or commensurate experience. Highly preferred educational, career, or life experiences in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

3 to 5 years of experience in designing and/or delivering effective course content as a trainer and supporting materials development with proven success. Formal coursework in eLearning, instructional design, and adult learning theory with a clear ability to translate that knowledge into developing quality training solutions.

The candidate has 3 to 5 years of experience managing projects and utilizing a variety of learning modalities such as instructor-led training, blended learning, and online and virtual learning environments. Experience working with various student and/or employee audiences, especially in higher education digital content development, higher ed training, and publishing is a plus.

Skills

Demonstrate strong project management skills. Proficient writer and speaker; familiar with using technology to convey ideas to advance end-user learning outcomes. Possess a working knowledge of learning management systems such as Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, Saba & EdX platforms. Proficient in the use of online learning tools such as Articulate 360, SmartBuilder, Captiva. Works independently and collaboratively with other team members and across various departments and business units in a fast-paced environment managing multiple and concurrent demands. Possesses an understanding of inherent bias in software development and best practices for building unbiased tools and applications. Advanced skills with Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access, other web-based applications (e.g., Smartsheets), and screen capturing tools such as SnagIt.

Working Conditions and Additional Requirements

This employee must be able to exercise appropriate judgment and act independently when necessary — occasional travel may be required. This is a remote position.
