In support of the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Continental Logistics Manager is responsible for all ASC logistics activities associated with on continent operations. Responsibilities include support of Antarctic Terminal Operations (ATO), United States Antarctic Program (USAP) science cargo, and supply operations for both McMurdo and South Pole stations. Supervises the allocation and tracking of inbound and outbound cargo and acts as a liaison with various organizations to develop cargo priorities. Coordinates documentation, procedural development and SOP maintenance. Develops and manages an Annual Program Plan.

Deployment to McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and/or South Pole Station, Antarctica is required of this position annually for a time period of 4 to 6 months. Eligibility for deployment will require physical and dental evaluations with parameters determined by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date, this process could take up to 4 months.

Our anticipated salary range for this position will be $105,000 to $115,000 annually.

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF’s Office of Polar Program’s Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

  • Vision: Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.

  • Mission: To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines. The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

The Challenge:

  • Acts as a liaison with grantees, Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) functional areas, Air National Guard (ANG) and Antarctica New Zealand (AntNZ) to prioritize arriving cargo from Christchurch, New Zealand and the forwarding of cargo to field camps and South Pole Station.

  • Coordinates with NSF, NYANG, AntNZ, and NIWC regarding incoming and outgoing cargo priorities.

  • Provides input to NSF, 139th Air Wing Operations, 304th Commander, and fixed-wing operations on flight schedules based on cargo and passenger requirements.

  • Manages cargo allocations and priorities for WINFLY, Austral summer, and Austral winter flight periods

  • Participates in ASC meetings and conferences. Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials. Prepares written correspondence and reports, while handling confidential matters in accordance with management policy

  • Lead and manage a team of subcontractor logistics professionals, providing guidance, support, and training as needed. Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that prioritizes safety and operational excellence.

  • Utilizes the USAP MAXIMO and Pipeline databases to generate regular reports on airlift, cargo, passenger, and fuel movement for internal and external stakeholders. Reconcile and analyze data ensuring accuracy and completeness.

  • Serves as the prime consultant to the NSF and ASC Area Managers concerning day to day airlift scheduling and cargo and passenger movements on a daily basis. Reports cargo and passenger movements to NSF Representative on station twice each week

  • Provides statistical information regarding intra-continental and intercontinental cargo movements, tracking weight and cube, Required on Site (ROS) dates, and actual deliveries by functional area

  • Tracks cargo movement throughout the USAP transportation system. Identifies frustrated cargo at Port Hueneme, CA and Christchurch, New Zealand to ensure continuous movement.

  • Oversees quality assurance practices throughout the movement of cargo and science samples.

  • Fields and troubleshoots cargo queries presented to the Logistics department regarding cargo loading/staging issues and any other Logistics-related discrepancies that may arise.

  • Develops both long range and short range solutions to problems concerning airlift and the operation of the ATO department.

  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with logistics operations, equipment malfunctions and other unforeseen circumstances.

  • Assists the T&L Manager and McMurdo Area Manager in development of program plans.

  • Works closely with the USAP Transportation Planner to develop the annual airlift schedule

  • Assists in development and management of South Pole Logistics, McMurdo ATO and Supply Operations labor and materials budgets, along with the Control Account Manager (CAM) and subcontractor teammate, working within the approved Annual Program Plan (APP)

  • Responsible for decision making directly affecting financial impact to ASC concerning metrics and budgetary objectives.

  • May be required to coordinate vessel operations on station.

  • Participates in minor and major capitalization projects as required, representing continental logistics as the subject matter expert and liaison for logistics support. Provides status updates of projects and related activities as necessary.

  • Ensures capital equipment responsibilities are maintained to include inventory, documentation, and proper disposal.

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program, and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Works with little or no supervision in decision making on a day to day basis.

  • Performs other duties as required.

What Sets You Apart:

  • Bachelor's Degree with 8+ years of prior relevant experience or Master's Degree with 4+ years of prior relevant experience. Experience in lieu of degree will be considered. Degrees with an emphasis on transportation, supply chain, or material management preferred.

  • 8+ years of experience working in a logistics and/or supply chain environment.

  • Minimum of 4+ years of experience supervising or leading teams or projects.

  • Familiarity with government supply and transportation systems is desirable, as is experience with remote site logistical support.

  • Experience with automated data processing systems as applied to logistics functions is required.

  • Demonstrated complex problem solver.
