ASSISTANT GENERAL COUNSEL - TAX LITIGATOR

The Assistant General Counsel role in the Disputes, Consultations and Regulatory Affairs Group of Deloitte's Office of General Counsel ("OGC") provides legal advice and litigation support to all of the practitioners and business leaders of the Deloitte U.S. Firms on litigation and federal and state regulatory matters, including, for example, contract and negligence claims and State Board, PCAOB, SEC and IRS requests and inquires.

Work you'll do

* Represent a national federal and multistate tax practice on accountant liability litigation risk and mitigation, information requests and oversee all phases of tax accountant liability litigation.

* Supervise or assist in the supervision and conduct of internal investigations of allegations of breach of contract and professional negligence and to respond to state and federal regulatory inquires.

* Manage breach of contract and professional negligence lawsuits, including personally developing trial strategy, coordinating discovery, and providing strategic direction to and close supervision of outside counsel; handling mediations and settlement negotiations; work with more senior OGC attorneys to develop and implement strategy and manage all aspects of complex litigation arising from the tax practice.

* Perform other job-related duties, as assigned.

* Be able to timely present information and advice, verbally and in writing, to other attorneys and clients at all levels of the organization.

* Be a self-starter, possess highly developed writing, communication and advocacy skills, strong counseling and negotiating skills, and be able to manage multiple matters simultaneously.

* Have good judgment and the ability to provide creative and practical solutions to complex problems affecting multiple businesses

* Have well-developed organizational and time management skills.

* Take initiative, work independently and solve complex problems creatively aligned with business needs.

Required Basic Qualifications

* Hold a JD or LLM from an accredited U.S. law school and be licensed to practice law in the United States.

* Experience in managing litigation, as well as participating in mediations and settlement negotiations.

* Experience with legal research and analysis, fact-finding, investigations, arguing motions, examining witnesses, and developing and executing a trial strategy.

* The position will be working with Deloitte's OGC office in Washington, DC and will require some travel.

* Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

Additional Qualifications

* 10+ years of experience, including trial experience representing tax accountants, in tax controversies and/or other experience with tax law.

*Experienced with the IRS Cir. 230, IRS exam and administrative appeals and AICPA standards.

*Former IRS counsel, DOJ Tax or Tax LLM and New York license preferred.
