Job Summary

Amentum is seeking a Industrial HVAC Technician for our operations and maintenance team in Waterloo, IA.


Typical work schedule is Monday – Friday; hours may vary based on business demand.

Technicians will operate and maintain HVAC equipment and systems for a large manufacturing facility. This position reports directly to the Operations Supervisor and is responsible for performing tasks at an advanced level that reflect substantial variety and complexity in responding to work orders, troubleshooting, and providing preventive maintenance on the industrial or commercial HVAC equipment. This position gives work direction and assistance to lower-level technicians.

Essential Functions:

  • Utilize the building automation system to track and adjust building conditions and the operation of facilities equipment.
  • Assist lower-level technicians with work assignments and coach as appropriate.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair heating and ventilation equipment, pumps, fans, chillers, dryers, compressors and other mechanical equipment as necessary.
  • Provide input to work instructions for equipment and recommend improvements to equipment reliability/performance.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC controls and operating systems as scheduled in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Respond and provide service and feedback to the customer on all assigned work orders including temperature, humidity, and pressurization issues while assuring compliance to codes, regulations and industry standards.
  • Understand company policies and safely perform functions of the position including following proper safety guidelines such as task hazard analysis, lockout/tagout, and wearing PPE as required.
  • Operate various measuring, diagnostic and testing instruments to help provide energy efficiency solutions.
  • Analyze problems, recommend solutions and initiate repairs.
  • Other duties as assigned by Management or Leads.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or demonstrated equivalent.
  • Six years of experience as an HVAC/R maintenance technician in an industrial or commercial environment or demonstrated equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Air conditioning and refrigeration experience.
  • EPA Universal certification or ability to obtain within one year.
  • This position does not include sponsorship for United States work authorization.
  • Ability to work in an aerial or scissors lift at heights of 30ft or higher.
  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test.
  • This position will require the ability to obtain a security access badge at our client’s location.
  • This position may require overtime, various shifts, weekends, holidays and alternative work schedules.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires the ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires the ability to regularly climb extension ladders, roof ladder, stepladders, and stairs at least 10 times during shift.
  • Requires the flexibility to bend/stoop, squat repetitive during shift.
  • Requires the ability to regularly kneel repetitive for shift.
  • Requires the ability to move in a 90-degree fashion on a repetitive basis for shift.
  • Requires the ability to stretch/reach on a repetitive basis for shift.
  • Requires the ability to walk extensively throughout the plant during shift.
  • Requires the use of a Company/Client approved utility knife.Requires the ability to differentiate colors pertaining to wire color-coding
  • Some tasks will require repetitive wrist movement.
  • Requires the ability to interact with all clients in a professional and friendly manner despite periods of stress.

Special Requirements:

  • Wear steel toe safety shoes with metatarsal guards, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats and other Personal Protective Equipment as needed.
  • Cope with demands (stressors) that are associated with the job and/or the work environment so that acceptable levels of performance and overall contribution are maintained.
  • Ability to read and understand repair manuals, specifications, drawings and schematic diagrams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in HVAC, industrial mechanical, industrial electrical, or a related skilled trade.
  • Journeyman’s or Master’s HVAC license.
  • Experience working in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) environment or CMMS mobile device.
  • Experience with Metasys building automation systems.
  • 4 Year Technical Training.
  • Experience working with steam systems (e.g. high pressure steam boilers), centrifugal chillers, air handling units, cooling towers, air compressors, air dryers, heat exchangers, exhaust systems, VAV pneumatic controls, and energy management systems (building automation control systems).
  • Experience reading dials, monitoring equipment and entering data into computer software.
