Medicinal Chemistry – Associate Director

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated individual with a strong background in medicinal chemistry to join our Small Molecule Drug Discovery team.

The successful candidate will lead a team of medicinal chemists and engage in rational design of new agents for the potential treatment in cardiovascular disease. The individual will apply modern drug design principles including machine learning approaches to solve medicinal chemistry problems relevant to the cardiovascular discovery portfolio. Furthermore, you will collaborate with a broad group of scientists within BMS to advance the projects from inception to IND enabling studies. Knowledge and experience in cardiovascular diseases or genetic based diseases is a plus. The successful chemist will interface with an excellent team of scientists in biology, biochemistry, structural biology, computational sciences and translational development.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and 12+ years of academic or industry experience

OR

Master’s Degree and 10+ years of academic or industry experience

OR

PhD and 8+ years of academic or industry experience

And

4+ years of leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry with 8+ years industry / pharmaceutical medicinal chemistry industrial experience and 4+ years of leadership experience.
  • Proven track record of supervising PhD level scientists to high levels of productivity, whilst improving the skills and knowledge of direct reports through mentorship and focused development activities
  • Demonstrated track record of leadership advancing programs through all stages of drug discovery to support IND-enabling studies or demonstrated success starting early discovery programs
  • Proven leadership capability in cross-functional teams, either as project team leader or co-leader
  • Track record of innovation and impact on programs documented through co-inventorship on issued patents and authorship of publications in peer-reviewed journals is necessary (may include both successful advances and data-driven terminations)
  • Strong working knowledge of protein-ligand interactions, conformational and structural analysis, experienced in partnering closely with computational chemists through appropriate use of computational tools and models as well as visualization applications
  • High level of creativity and productivity with strong synthetic problem-solving skills, synthetic methods, and reaction mechanisms are required
  • Ability to champion chemistry efforts into new directions to achieve project milestones
  • Strong skills in gathering, documenting, and analyzing information from competitive sources such as patents and meetings and using this information to guide program strategy
  • Experience working in cardiovascular or genetic based diseases is desired, but not required
  • Broad knowledge of the drug discovery and development process
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills demonstrated ability to write peer reviewed quality work or invention disclosures for patent applications, and able to present the rationale, key data, issues and accomplishments department wide

For California Sites - The starting compensation for this job is a range from $159,000 - $220,000, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility). The starting pay takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation is decided based on demonstrated experience.
