The Role

Bristol Myers Squibb is looking to recruit a permanent Senior Operations Portfolio Lead or Operations Portfolio Lead – Early Clinical Development Hematology and Oncology based in Boudry, Switzerland or in our US office in NJ, San Diego or San Francisco.

Position Summary:

The (Senior) Operations Portfolio Lead will drive and lead the successful execution of operational components of early clinical drug programs (asset team level) using strong project management, communication and organizational skills. Contributes to the development of clinical strategy and helps shape the clinical development plan. Monitors operational progress and addresses and manages obstacles. Serves as primary Global Development Operations operational contact for the program. Coordinates the development of program level documents and plans. Effectively leads a global team of individuals assigned to the program.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Study Planning and Conduct

  • Drives business strategy from an operational perspective with minimal supervision.
  • Holds high-level accountability for study execution.
  • Acts as an escalation point for all program work.
  • Participates in necessary governance forums.
  • Leads the shift in mindset and behavior to identify improvement opportunities and bring forward best practices to support study execution within the portfolio and across the broader organization.
  • Accountable for financial stewardship of programs or portfolio.
  • Proactively partners with cross-functional counterparts and external vendors to address issues/concerns.
  • Accountable for financial stewardship of programs, while working in close partnership with Finance.

Operational Leadership / Decision Making

  • Develops project standards and ensures consistency and efficiency across the program.
  • Consistently makes operational decisions in a timely manner with accountability for issue follow through where issues are escalated.
  • Uses expert judgment to make sound decisions based on a balanced evaluation of available information within a complex environment of competing project priorities.
  • Acts decisively to address team challenges with a high degree of autonomy.

Communication

  • Has strong oral and written communication skills to influence, inform, and guide large scale global operational teams.
  • Fosters partnerships across projects and multidisciplinary teams with the ability to work on complex diverse opportunities effectively.
  • Sets expectations for positive team behaviors and manages team against BMS behaviors and best practices.
  • Drives issues to resolution and communicates to ensure that issues have been worked through to resolution.
  • Drives the development of change management principles to support communication and implementation of integrated change.
  • Frequently communicates program status to internal and externalstakeholders, including Sr. Leadership.

Stakeholder Management

  • Advanced leadership competencies and influencing skills with senior leaders and cross-functional leaders.
  • Proven teambuilding skills and the ability to lead partnerships across projects and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrates diplomacy and/or acts as primary point of escalation when interfacing with other functional areas, clinical research organizations (CROs) and other outside vendors.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • 10 years of experience for Director level (or 7+ year for the Associate Director level) in Global Clinical Drug development setting and prior management/supervisory experience preferred for the Director level
  • Expertise in the oversight of clinical trials/ portfolios with demonstrated focus on enterprise performance to bring value and efficiencies to an organization.
  • Independently leading and managing global oncology or hematology clinical trials in the Pharmaceutical industry plus 3-5 years in a leadership position directing the operations of a global clinical oncology development program.
  • Experience leading Phase 1 oncology or hematology clinical trials strongly preferred.
  • Candidate must have a minimum of a BS/BA Degree
  • Strong program planning and project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • Proven teambuilding skills and ability to foster partnerships across projects and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication skills to influence, inform or guide others. Strong leadership skillsets and capabilities.

Technical Competencies

  • Expert knowledge of ICH/GCP guidelines and FDA regulations and clinical operations development processes.
  • Experience in leading global clinical research activities.
  • Therapeutic Area knowledge.
  • Ability to manage teams and/or direct reports.
  • Advanced project management skills

  • Demonstrated financial acumen
