Associate Director, Research Project Manager (Protein Homeostasis)

The Project Associate Director (PD) will coordinate drug discovery activities between the cross-functional disciplines and multi-site locations within the Protein Homeostasis Center of Excellence, that include Structural Biology and Proteomics (in San Diego, CA), Cell Biology, Biochemistry, and Biophysics, (in Brisbane, CA), and Medicinal Chemistry (in Lawrenceville, NJ). The PD will also interface with collaborating Small Molecule Drug Discovery (SMDD) and Research and Early Development (R&ED) functional disciplines, early portfolio teams within Thematic Research Centers (TRCs), and internal and external partnerships to streamline and accelerate Protein Homeostasis initiatives.

The Project Associate Director (PD) will organize meetings, develop and execute detailed cross-functional research plans, facilitate science-based and business/portfolio-oriented discussions, and have a clear idea of hit finding, lead optimization, and coordinating make/test cycles for compounds ranging from early ligand identification to developing PH assets within the drug discovery portfolio, and in collaboration with external partnerships. Proactive cross-functional planning, defining the operational strategy, management of timelines, budget/cost, quality, and risk assessment and mitigation are critical skills for implementing success.

The PD provides an independent voice to shape the overall project strategy and drive optimal decisions for the broader portfolio value. They will be accountable for fostering development of high performing teams, actively monitoring the health and operating efficiency of teams, and ultimately guiding teams toward entry into the early development space.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • The PM is embedded and highly autonomous in their day-to-day work within the Protein Homeostasis Center of Excellence and collaborating SMDD and R&ED functions and external partnerships, and interfaces with other Research PMs supporting the entire research portfolio.
  • Accountable for consistent development of integrated cross-functional project timelines, risk assessment and mitigation plans, and managing progress versus plan.
  • Facilitates effective, science-based business decisions including development of scenarios as needed, highlighting interdependencies and downstream impacts (including but not limited to timelines and budget) of strategic decisions.
  • Ensures all decisions are assessed as to their risks and impacts and ensures mitigation plans are implemented.
  • Accountable for communication to team and stakeholders in a transparent and timely manner.
  • Acts as an integrator within the transitional E-DPT and across the enterprise to ensure alignment and connect best practices.
  • Develops and coordinates resource and budget planning across functions to assure adequate resources are applied to the project and any changes are highlighted appropriately.
  • Shapes, maintains, and assess the effectiveness of team operating models.
  • Coaches’ disciplines and sub-teams to drive excellence and accountability, governance expectations and preparation for key decision point discussions with focus on cross-functional input and rigorous debate.
  • For projects that are being jointly developed via internal or external partnerships, works closely with a key strategic alliance partner to communicate and coordinate actions between teams.
  • Change Agent for continuous improvement and transformational initiatives within R&ED.
  • As PH programs develop, ensure all Development Candidate Selection (DC) decisions are assessed as to their impacts and communicated to stakeholders within R&ED and in particular the Early Development PMs who will take programs forward, in a transparent and timely manner, highlighting the interdependencies and downstream impacts of strategic decisions taken in the research space.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and 12+ years of academic or industry experience

OR

Master’s Degree and 10+ years of academic or industry experience

OR

Ph.D. and 8+ years of academic or industry experience

4+ years of leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of experience in the late discovery - early development space and experience with leading cross-functional matrix teams in this space.
  • Demonstrated competency in early phase drug development, a solid understanding of disease area and early phase drug development pathway with the ability to contribute to strategic discussions.
  • Leadership skills including situational leadership, ability to lead a team of experts and influence without authority.
  • Demonstrates ability to lead matrix teams, knows how to work at the strategic level with the project teams, and when to delve deeper to resolve issues and challenges.
  • Experience with commonly used project management tools including but not limited to Microsoft project.
  • Strong communicator able to integrate and succinctly summarize the various parts of a project and effectively tailor messages to audience including senior leaders.
  • Guides transitional communication in preparation of high-quality documents and presentations for review at governance committees.
  • Ensures appropriate transitional activities and membership during the progression of the program.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems and manage difficult stakeholder situations.
  • Ability to lead the development of critical path analyses and scenario planning.
  • Excellent Project Management Skills – drives execution while balancing speed, quality, and cost.
