Job Description:

The Defense Health Operation of Leidos is currently looking for a Research Scientist III to provide advanced laser and radiofrequency systems support to biomedical research at the Naval Medical Research Unit, San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio, TX. NAMRU-SA conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.

Primary Responsibilities

The ideal candidate shall:

  • Provide expertise in laser and radiofrequency systems including recent advances in technology.

  • Possess specialized safety analysis techniques for high-energy laser systems and radiofrequency systems and their deployment in a military setting.

  • Provide expertise in directed energy systems and methods employed to exploit electromagnetic radiation for warfighter applications so as to define problems and design experiments that will determine hazards associated with operational use of electromagnetic systems, including laser and radiofrequency systems.

  • Provide support in writing protocol-driven research proposals, animal use protocols, human use protocols, technical reports, final reports, and peer-reviewed manuscripts.

  • Demonstrate ability and skill to prepare all aspects of professionally accepted scientific reports including methods, data interpretation, presentation, and significance of findings in relation to other findings by peers, and present effective oral presentations.

  • Provide oversight and management of 6.1, 6.2, and 6.3 federal research programs, including the preparation, planning, execution and reporting of each type of research according to DoD requirements.

  • Prepare experimental subjects, set up experimental equipment, and aid in training and development of experimental subjects for experimental procedures in accordance with approved animal or human use protocols.

  • Oversee junior personnel associated with research projects; manage research data.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidates must have completed a Doctoral Degree in Health Physics or related field, or Master’s Degree and board certification from the American Board of Health Physics with 6 – 10 years of prior relevant experience.

  • Knowledge of and experience in contractual program management procedures and requirements.

  • Knowledge of National Laser Safety Standards (ANSI Z136), the committees that create these standards, and their application to military systems.

  • Knowledge of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers standards (IEEE C95), the committees that create these standards, and their application to military systems.

  • Knowledge of modeling and simulation of directed energy bioeffects.

  • The candidate will be required to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level. Preference given to a candidate who already has this clearance level.

  • Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current DoD SECRET clearance with potential of upgrading to DoD TOP SECRET
