What you’ll be doing...

We are looking for a KubernetesEngineer to join the Verizon Global Technology Solutions (GTS) Team. The individual will Architect, Engineer, and implement an enterprise wide Kubernetes platform to implement simple/automated Cloud adoption to containers platform to reduction expenses as part of IT’s mission.

You will be a technical leader in the CI/CD process providing technical guidance and direction for implementing modernization enhancements into the Kubernetes/Docker CaaS enterprise wide environments. This individual will have a high level of technical expertise and daily hands-on implementation working in a product team developing services in two week sprints using agile principles. This entails programming and orchestrating the deployment of feature sets into the Kubernetes CaaS platform along with building Docker containers via a fully automated CI/CD pipeline utilizing Jenkins, Ansible, AWS CloudFormation, Artifactory, Gitlab.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Evaluate technical options for meeting user needs and ensure that system requirements are identified, prioritized, and incorporated in an effective, efficient manner.
  • Translate application requirements into system requirements that can then be used to design and implement the operating environment for applications to run in a Kubernetes CaaS platform.
  • Evaluate legacy application design and recommend fundamental application redesign changes required to function in a Kubernetes CaaS platform.
  • Responsible for developing standards and provides guidance to management and peers.
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills needed to demonstrate developed and integrated solutions for a Kubernetes CaaS platform.
  • Evaluate new Cloud CaaS Solutions to determine value within Verizon's IT.
  • Perform POC (Proof of Concept) technical evaluations for new technologies for use in the Cloud.
  • Perform analyses of various Cloud CaaS platforms setting up comprehensive test and evaluation plans, and summarizing test results. Assess potential benefits to Verizon.
  • Set the technical direction and determine work priorities based on interactions with the Cloud Architecture teams, the Cloud and Software Vendors, and the Verizon Application teams.
  • Communicate with management and executive leadership to ensure the team’s goals and priorities align with the department, but not on what the individual work tasks are or the technical strategy for implementing the solution.
  • Lead problem resolution for business impacting failures and drive the resolution to meet platform service level objectives. This includes assembling resources from existing team members and engaging other engineering resources from peer teams in order to restore service disruptions.
  • Manage the crisis bridge, and to escalate to the manager and director levels when necessary to engage resources from the necessary product owning teams.
  • Decide upon the recovery method, establish the recovery plan, and to drive/implement the recovery plan for the affected platform during the crisis bridge. Upon the resolution, this individual will perform a detailed root cause analysis involving the necessary resources.
  • Understand architecting and engineering large enterprise solutions to achieve cost efficiencies, scaling, and availability for a large enterprise environment. Interactions will take place with Senior Management and DMTS/Associate Fellow/Fellow architects along with interfacing with peer engineers across the enterprise.

This role will be based out of one of the locations listed in the posting. In this role, you'll have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days set by your manager

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
  • Four or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of containers and container management technologies; Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience on Server and Cloud Virtualization technologies.
  • Experience in large containerized computing environments utilizing Kubernetes with Docker containers for a large IT enterprise wide environment.
  • Experience and knowledge in Public, Private, and Hybrid Cloud computing environments including the integration of compute technologies.
  • Knowledge of scripting and automation programming -- languages like Ruby, Python, Groovy, BASH.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • Masters in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field.
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect or other AWS certifications.
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) certification.
  • Experience on Server and Cloud Virtualization technologies.
  • Knowledge and experience implementing/supporting Kubernetes.
  • Experience leveraging and managing CI/CD toolchain products like Jira, Gitlab, Artifactory, and Jenkins.
  • Knowledge with CentOS, Alpine or other Linux derivatives.
  • Knowledge of Public Cloud architectures, configurations, services, and solutions (AWS, GCP, OKE, Azure).
  • Understanding of Application Architectures, microservices design, 12 factor applications.
  • Knowledge of scripting and automation programming -- languages like Ruby, Python, Groovy, BASH.
  • Knowledge of Configuration management tools like Ansible.
  • Experience with NewRelic, Prometheus, or other monitoring solutions
  • Knowledge of information systems concepts, system administration, and cloud platforms.
  • Knowledge of system design and hardware at an enterprise level.
