Job Description:

Leidos is seeking an Transportation R&D Engineer to join our team that operates the FHWA's Saxton Transportation Operations Laboratory (STOL), a USDOT research lab focused on the improvement of transportation operations, safety, mobility, and environmental impacts. The Transportation R&D Engineer will be a key part of the Leidos team supporting connected vehicle research at STOL, developing technology for connected and automated vehicles and advanced transportation research testbeds. This is an opportunity suited for someone who is seeking a hands-on role in a fast-paced research environment with the chance to be involved in many different projects. The successful Transportation R&D Engineer will be part of a larger research team that advances connected and automated vehicle technologies for the FHWA via developing, testing, and demonstrating new capabilities associated with vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. The work environment is very collegial and benefits from a collaborative effort across a growing interdisciplinary team. This is an in-person Transportation R&D Engineer position which also requires occasional travel for field work.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Designing, specifying, and integrating electrical components, computer hardware, and equipment to meet research needs.

  • Assembling, installing, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment and components.

  • Maintaining electromechanical systems and inventory management.

  • Performing engineering duties at the systems level on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software required for traffic signals control, traffic management systems, and vehicle guidance and control systems.

  • Interfacing with researchers and other users of the Saxton Laboratory and associated testbeds.

  • Conducting various phases of research projects across the breadth of transportation science.

  • Documenting and presenting test procedures, best practices, and results.

  • Supporting the operations and maintenance of the lab facility, equipment, and associated testbeds.

  • Interfacing with government clients and technical personnel.

  • Interacting with manufacturers and suppliers to troubleshoot or procure equipment.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelors in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or other scientific or engineering discipline with 1+ years related experience. Internships may count for experience. High School diploma with 4+ years’ related experience may be considered in lieu of a Bachelors.

  • Ability to test and troubleshoot complex electrical, power, and communication systems.

  • Software development tools and methods, including one or more commonly used programming language, such as C++, JAVA, python, or MATLAB.

  • Computer networking, such as configuring Local Access Networks, adjusting firewalls, managing IPs, and general troubleshooting.

  • Project and time management skills to ensure the products and services are delivered on-time and within budget.

  • Must be a good team player and be able to give and take constructive feedback.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Must be prompt, schedule-conscious, detail oriented, and able to focus on the work at hand.

  • Must be coachable and open to self-discovery and professional improvement.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.

  • Must have valid driver’s license and ability to pass DMV background check.

Extra consideration given for experience in any of the following:

  • Traffic signal controller operations, configuration, communications, and transportation management enter operations.

  • Use of spectrum and network analyzers and other RF test equipment.

  • Geospatial positioning (e.g., GPS) and position correction (e.g., RTCM)

  • Automotive engineering.

  • Wireless communications, particularly DSRC, cellular, or Wi-Fi.

  • Connected vehicle or transportation communication standards (e.g., SAE J2735, NTCIP 1202, etc.).

  • Familiarity with vehicle power and communication systems.

  • Vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications and networking, including related hardware and software configurations.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $50,700.00 - $78,000.00 - $105,300.00
