About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

This position can be filled in either the Akron OH, Greensburg PA, Morristown NJ or Reading PA locations. Job requires part office (work from home or FE location) and part field work (at job sites).

As part of the Communications Engineering team, the Communication Systems Design Specialist’s core responsibilities include the engineering, design, implementation, and procurement of supporting infrastructure (i.e., power, structures, and environmental systems) for facilities, substations and field area network communications. The group creates network & communications documentation, providing project definitions and standards which are maintained in the company’s document management platform, and is responsible for mapping of network transport assets in the Geographic Information System (GIS).

Responsibilities Include:

  • Delivers high-performance, high-availability, and cost-effective solutions to manage ongoing costs while meeting the technical and business requirements.
  • Participates in installations and upgrades of communications technologies to ensure computing and network architecture solutions are properly implemented.
  • Supports the design and delivery of new products/product enhancements.
  • Ensures technical standards and procedures are properly followed on assigned projects.
  • Maintains scope, schedule, and budget for assigned projects.
  • Takes ownership of assigned work and coordinates with internal and external groups on project delivery.
  • Maintains functional knowledge of technology, technology changes, and the relationships of technology to emerging business requirements.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Networking, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Telecommunications or related field, and/or related work experience.
  • Related experience includes but is not limited to:
    • Demonstrated experience with test equipment (e.g., DMMs, antenna analyzers, spectrum analyzers and RF wattmeters).
    • Demonstrated experience with environmental support systems (e.g., HVAC, AC/DC power systems, batteries, generators).
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and plan work, work on multiple concurrent tasks, and meet deadlines.
    • Demonstrated analytical skills to effectively resolve technical problems.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to company sites as necessary and work flexible hours. 5%-day travel to nearby FE sites is common with overnight stays rare, but possible.
  • Ability to effectively use standard PC software, including MS Windows and Office products, web-based systems, e-mail, relational database query tools.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels and with varying backgrounds.
  • Ability to effectively present and lead small meetings.
  • Experience in providing responsive and effective customer service.
  • Preferred Qualifications includes but is not limited to:
    • Data communications and networking skills/knowledge (e.g., wireless, fiber).
    • Familiarity with microwave huts, outdoor enclosures, wood poles, monopoles, lattice towers and their procurement.
    • Familiarity with Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA), Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), and general substation devices (e.g., Switches/Reclosers, Transformer Temperature Monitors, Alarming).
    • Familiarity with relevant utility operations (transmission, distribution, generation).
    • Familiarity with engineering drafting software (e.g., AutoCAD, Visio).
    • Familiarity with Geographic Information System (GIS).
    • Familiarity of in-building cellular phone signal booster and network extender technology.
