We engage and train internal employees to ensure that they thoroughly comprehend the science behind the medicine and review further unmet medical needs to bolster collaboration and further differentiate our portfolio.

Our company has been involved in research and development efforts in the HIV field since the start of the epidemic. Our Research & Development division has discovered and/or developed firsts in several classes of anti-retrovirals. More recently, our Research & Development division has developed and licensed a second generation NNRTI.

Looking forward, our Research & Development division is developing medicines to reduce the reservoir of HIV-infected resting cells with the aim of inducing long-term remission or cure

Our company’s Scientific Affairs HIV function is comprised of strong clinically and scientifically qualified individuals, whose focus is to maximize meaningful bi-directional scientific exchange with the worldwide clinical and academic HIV community. This team is positively impacting our company’s Research and Development strategy in discovering and developing new HIV medicines.

The functions of the Scientific Affairs HIV-Infectious Disease team at our Research & Development division includes but are not limited to:

  • Provide our company’s senior leadership with the most up-to-date scientific data, together with a synthesis of its strategic implications for our Early and Late stage Development Programs

  • Lead Scientific Input Engagements (SIEs) between Product Development Teams and global scientific leaders to provide focused input into our company’s development strategy

  • Lead a portfolio of investigator-initiated studies in HIV in collaboration with multiple disease oriented Late-stage Development Teams

  • Provide joint oversight of investigator-initiated studies in collaboration with Alliance partners and other pharmaceutical companies

  • Lead competitive intelligence support for scientific congresses, overseeing both planning and execution

  • Collate in-house and competitor data readouts for presentation at live internal congress debrief meetings and provide executive editorial oversight for internal congress scientific summaries

  • Undertake interactions with key scientific leaders at international congresses, and global academic medical center visits to foster scientific collaboration with key external stakeholders

  • Participate and co-chair Global Advisory Boards (GABs) which seek to understand the scientific community’s perception of our company’s own data

  • Participate in Closed Research Updates (CRUs) which seek to gain expert input from a worldwide network of investigators into our company’s ongoing clinical research program

The Distinguished Scientist, Global Director of Scientific Affairs (GDSA) for HIV will maximize meaningful bi-directional scientific exchange with the worldwide clinical and academic HIV community in order to positively impact Research and Development strategy for new HIV medicines, and to improve outcomes for patients with HIV.

This Distinguished Scientist will lead a large investigator-initiated studies program in partnership with Late-stage Development Teams in HIV-Infectious Disease and Infectious Disease Medical Affairs. As needed, the Distinguished Scientist will also provide support for Early-stage Development Teams and Translational HIV teams.

The Distinguished Scientist will partner with HIV Medical Affairs leadership to develop the global HIV Scientific Medical and Research Team (SMART) strategy across designated therapeutic areas.

The responsibilities of the Distinguished Scientist include but are not limited to:

  • Lead our company’s Investigator Initiated Studies program in assigned therapeutic areas ensuring scientific rigor across one of industry’s largest portfolios

  • Provide subject matter expertise for HIV Product Development and Publications Teams, and facilitate cross-functional communication and collaboration in pursuit of our company’s Research and Development strategy

  • Lead Research and Development activities, and synthesize competitive intelligence relevant to our company’s Research and Development strategy at key scientific congresses in HIV-Infectious Diseases

  • Lead our company’s global scientific input forums to gain external scientific/clinical insights in support of our company’s Research and Development strategy

  • Sustain our company’s scientific credibility and foster and develop relationships with global leaders, major academic medical centers, and key professional societies and organizations, through relevant bi-directional scientific exchange

  • Guide development of consistent and accurate scientific content in support of our global field-based HIV Medical Affairs teams, and advise and support them in providing global perspective in their interactions with external stakeholders

  • Maintain personal expertise in the assigned disease area science in the context of advancing clinical and treatment paradigms

Education Requirements:

  • Medical Degree (MD/MB BS or equivalent degree)

  • In addition to MD degree, a higher scientific degree (e.g.: PhD) is desirable

Required:

  • 5+ years clinical experience following completion of postgraduate training in an Infectious Disease/HIV related sub-specialty

  • Research experience as lead or co-lead clinical investigator in the HIV field

  • Publication record in an HIV-relevant therapeutic area

  • Participation in professional medical society committees related to scientific congresses, practice guidelines, research agendas, or policy

  • Ability to work in a complex matrix environment and effectively operate in a team-oriented structure

  • Excellent facilitation and consultative skills; ability to effectively interact with internal and external stakeholders, and to positively influence decision making, at a senior level

  • Excellent interpersonal communication (written and verbal), and results-oriented project management skills
