Looking for a Full-Time Clinical Dietitian!

Department: Surg Outpt GI

Schedule: M-F Day

Location: 800 Walnut St.


Summary: Responsible for the nutritional care of UPHS patients in the Penn Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program. As a member of the team, coordinates the nutritional and clinical processes related to the surgical treatment of obesity. Takes leadership role in development and implementation of the surgical obesity program including; development of best practice nutrition protocols for surgical obesity, develops and provides comprehensive nutrition education programs for patients both individually and through support groups. Works collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers in the department of surgery and the Center for Weight and Eating Disorders. Functions as a professional consultant to the physician to assure cost-effective, high quality and current nutrition practices for this specialized patient population. Performs nutrition assessments, develops specialized nutrition care plans and performs ongoing reassessments of nutritional status and nutrition interventions. Maintains comprehensive knowledgebase in medical nutrition therapy with an emphasis in Surgical Obesity Management. Evaluates, interprets and applies result of research to practice and the delivery of patient care services. Participates in the development of research–based policies/procedure and practice guidelines. Is expected to participate in lectures or publications regarding specialized nutrition care within UPHS, local, state and national meetings. Development of nutrition education materials for the Bariatric Surgery Program. Provide individual nutrition counseling to adolescents and other patients as needed. Participate in medical weight management for patients prior to insurance approval of bariatric surgery. Precepts dietetic students and interns and acts as a mentor for these students as a subject matter expert in the area of bariatric nutrition.

Responsibilities:

• Ensures communication and collaboration with supervisors and fellow co-workers to serve patients and other customers to the best of his/her ability.

• Anticipates patients’/customers’ needs and acts accordingly.

• Analyzes problems from the customers’ point of view.

• Honors patient/customer/employee confidentiality.

• Attends staff meetings and continuing education in-service training as directed by supervisor.

• Performs and documents comprehensive, accurate and timely patient assessments in accordance with program practice guidelines. Completes timely reassessments and reevaluates nutrition care plan in response to patient outcome.

• Provides individual/group nutrition education to patients/families in the acute care and ambulatory care settings. Education considers patient age, cultural and psychosocial needs. Identifies barriers to learning and adapts education approach.

• Works effectively with program physicians to provide comprehensive patient care related to complex nutrition assessment and surgical obesity nutrition interventions.

• Seeks feedback on how to improve performance and offers constructive feedback, as well.

• Applies learning for improved performance.

• Demonstrates understanding and ownership of how his/her role contributes to achieving the success of the Department and the Health System.

• Demonstrates a personal commitment to ensuring a clean and safe working environment.

• Uses resources wisely – as if they were one’s own.

• Strives to understand and value differences in others’ race, nationality, gender, age, background, experience, and style.

• Assists in orienting new employees, if/as needed.

Credentials:

  • Registered Dietitian (Required)
  • Commission on Dietetic Registration Registered Dietitian required or CDR approval with completion of RD within 6 months of hire.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

Bachelor’s degree (required)

Certificate in adult weight management through Certification Dietetic Registration (CDR) (preferred)
