The Emergency Surgery Service (ESS) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania has an exciting opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join their team of board certified general surgeons and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). The ESS team at HUP is part of the Division of Traumatology, Surgical Critical Care, and Emergency Surgery and provides urgent and emergent surgical care on a 24/7 basis. As an NP/PA on this service you will be part of a high functioning interprofessional team who is responsible for concentrating emergent surgical care into a cohesive surgical provider group with expertise in the management of complex and critically ill surgical patients. Responsibilities for the PA/NP who joins our team will include inpatient management of pre- and post-operative patients, outpatient clinic including telemedicine, clinical decision making, bedside procedures (including complex wound care), intricate discharge planning, care coordination, team collaboration, and education of patients, family and staff. In addition to providing quality care across the continuum in collaboration with physicians, nursing staff and other members of the care team, the APP performs histories, physicals, and procedures according to credentialing and privileging and is expected to manage patient care autonomously within the scope of his/her professional practice. The APP will also participate in educational activities, research as appropriate, ensures regulatory compliance, documents care according to standards, and prescribes in accordance with the collaborative agreement and state regulations. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the role also involves participation in the Department’s Quality Improvement initiatives and Unit-Based Clinical Leadership (UBCL). Opportunities for professional growth and development are available through research, lecturing, publications, and involvement with departmental and hospital projects and committees.

All nurse practitioners and physician Assistants function under the guidelines designed by the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center medical staff guidelines and are credentialed through that body. The PA or CRNP hired will be held accountable through a formal job description, the delineation of privileges, and their agreement with their collaborating/supervising physician who has initiated a Collaborative Practice Agreement.

Schedule: The ideal candidate will be working weekends, such as Friday, Saturday & Sunday or the weekend and 1-week day.

Credentials:

  • BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association (For providers in the ambulatory setting) required
  • ACLS certification required
  • Certified Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (Required)
  • PA state Acute Care Nurse Practitioner licensure (CRNP/PA) required
  • Prescriptive Authority required
  • PA state RN licensure (RN) required
  • PA state PA-C license required

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Master or Doctor of Science or Health Sciences (Required)
  • New to practice or < 2.5 years.
  • The CRNP/PA must be reviewed by the Credentials Committee and approved by the Medical Board.
