About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

Transmission Forestry Specialist - This job is responsible for corporate oversight and the day-to-day operations of vegetation management and the right-of-way clearing field operations of the Company.

Standardized Summar y of Res p onsibilities:

  • Demonstrate and direct a solid commitment to all aspects of safety.
  • Under supervision, oversee the execution of the annual vegetation management work plan.
  • Under supervision, perform the resolution of property owner refusals, responding to owner work requests, questions and resolving complaints.
  • Under supervision, perform field inspections of vegetation management work completed by contractor tree crews and post-circuit inspections of rework to ensure specification compliance.
  • Under supervision, provide guidance to contracted vegetation companies within assigned territory; this includes all related vegetation management work such as work planning, tree work, herbicide work, new construction and all unplanned work activity.
  • Under supervisor coordinates all vegetation management activities within assigned territory, including maintenance, unplanned work, new business and storm response, by meeting scheduled timelines and achieving quality work scope completion while meeting cost targets.
  • Assist in implementing the quality control process.
  • Under supervision, perform aerial, LiDAR ground and mitigation vegetation inspections.
  • Under supervision, perform tree-related outage investigations.
  • Supports storm restoration activities as required including 24-hour on-call availability.
  • Under supervision, assist with work-load estimates using predetermined methodologies.
  • Review and approve contractor timesheets.
  • Under supervision, perform duties associated with clearing vegetation for new construction of Transmission facilities.
  • Under supervision, implement the Vegetation Management Program and complete required documentation to ensure mandatory state and federal regulatory standards are met.
  • Under supervision, responsible for geographical areas throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania.

Standardized Summar y of Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Forestry Science or related discipline (agriculture or environmental), or Associate's degree in Forestry Science or related discipline (agriculture or environmental) along with 2 years related job experience, or High School Diploma (or GED) along with 4-5 years related work experience. Related work experience is utility vegetation or right of way management. International Society of Arboriculture, Certified Arborist / utility specialist preferred.
  • Must be an ISA Certified Arborist Utility Specialist preferred or obtain certification within the first six months of holding the position.
  • Must hold a State pesticide license or obtain one within the first six months of holding the position.
  • Working knowledge in urban forestry, plant identification, hazard tree evaluation, pesticide applications and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate and present himself/herself in a professional manner
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills to gain cooperation with internal and external customers
  • Demonstrated public speaking and presentation skills
  • Be able to effectively handle conflict and provide information for legal matters.
  • Working knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code
  • Working knowledge of the American National Standards Institute - ANSI Z133.1 - Arboricultural Operations

  • Working knowledge of the American National Standards Institute - ANSI A300 Part 1 - Tree Care Operations - Tree, Shrub and Other Woody Plant Maintenance - Standard Practice - Pruning
  • Working knowledge of the American National Standard for Tree Care Operations - ANSI-A300 - Part 7 Tree, Shrub and Other Woody Plant Maintenance - Standard Practice - (Integrated Vegetation Management a Electric Utility Rights-of-Way)
  • Working knowledge of the OSHA Safety Standard 29 CFR Part 1910.269as it applies to all tree pruning and removal personnel who may work near electrical conductors.
  • Working knowledge of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE) Standard 516-2003.
  • Working knowledge of the NERC Standard FAC-003-1 - Transmission Vegetation Management Program.
  • Working knowledge of overhead and underground construction methods, maintenance practices, overhead and underground construction standards, rates, procedures and service practices.
  • Working knowledge of SAP, GIS View and PowerOn computer systems.
  • Proficiency with PC software applications which include Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Understand the Company's Accident Prevention Handbook and possess the ability to work safely.
  • Must have a personal vehicle to commute to various facilities and locations as required, possessing a valid driver's license.
  • Possess the physical ability to perform field surveys and inspections in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to build relationships and credibility, and provide staff support to management and higher levels of professionals, as needed.
