Job Description

The West Point Technical Operations Laboratory Process Support group within the our Manufacturing Division is responsible for supporting all commercial vaccines with best in class laboratory support for technical investigations, life-cycle-management driven process enhancements and commercial vaccine expansions. We seek an energetic, people-oriented leader with strong scientific and technical skills to lead laboratory activities supporting multiple vaccine programs.

The Associate Director of Downstream Laboratory Process Support will be responsible for management and oversight of a group of scientist supporting business-critical downstream/purification objectives for one or more vaccine franchises. The scope of work includes development and transfer of lab-scale models, continuous improvement, support of manufacturing investigations, and development of novel methods to enable process understanding.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Act as process subject matter expert (SME) for our vaccine downstream processing for recombinant protein, virus, and polysaccharide.

  • Manages one or more vaccine purification downstream projects and prioritizes resources to align with business objectives

  • Designs and leads execution of experimental protocols using the GVTO lab facilities and/or production equipment at full scale. Communicate data driven results to all levels within and across organizations.

  • Hands-on leadership and participation in laboratory activities

  • Examines an issue from diverse perspectives (safety, compliance, automation, equipment, process, and people) in order to best understand, formulate action plans, execute on the work plan, and ultimately achieved resolution.

  • Collaborates and engages with counterparts within technical operations, site manufacturing, commercialization, research, and other process support labs. Authors and approves technical documentations.

  • Manages work for a team of scientists and engineers and allocate resources.

  • Builds talent by coaching, managing, and developing staff through both direct and indirect reporting relationships.

Position Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Pharmaceuticals, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or related field with 8 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree with 6 years of relevant experience; or Ph.D. with 4 years of relevant experience.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum 2 years of direct hands-on experience in vaccine or biologics process development, manufacturing, or laboratory operations.

  • Expertise in lab-scale experimental execution and data analysis.

  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical-based data analysis.

  • Strong communicator with proven collaboration skills and ability to drive accountability within their own team and within cross-functional teams.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Prior hands-on experience with purification process

  • Minimum of 3 years leadership or supervisory experience

  • Experience with execution and/or development of process analytics for large molecules
